I recently removed my roof rack bolts and welded the holes shut with silicone bronze rod. There was a good amount of rust pitting on all the bolts. I tried removing as much as possible, then sanded and as suggested by a friend, I painted over the area with plain old Kilz. His reasoning was that it would seal the area, keep out water and at the same time rob the rust of oxygen. I have since realized that it did not work very well. Some rust areas are already starting to show. I am going to wire off what I did then try the evaporust since it seems to be getting a good review here. But then what is the next step? I need to really seal it well before painting. I think it is going to be a constant battle. I know that welding the area included some rust that will probably never go away I am assuming. I will also want to do a little fill work in the same area. I am afraid that simply adding some bondo over the area might make it worse. I would like to seal it first if possible.

use a rust converter like rustmort and an epoxy sealer, followed by primer and paint. Make sure you seal the metal with epoxy before applying bondo, if its small fill use glazing putty.

Thanks. Any difference, or is there something better about rustmort over the evaporust?

probably similar, i have only used the one product.

The only problem is that no matter how far I ground or sanded, I could tell there was still included rust. I feel like I will never get it all out. The last thing I want to do is cut it out and weld in a new plate. Not worth it. If I sand as much as I can, use evaporust to convert as much as possible, then coat with epoxy before priming and painting, will that rust really still have a chance to expand and come back?
