Not sure the accuracy, but recall reading somewhere stock was either 3k or 6k and that is what our local dealer has on the shelf. All the same dump it out and follow the above advise. I'm running 15k in a black hub.

Running in the desert, (especially slogging it through sand without airing down:hillbilly:), I would go at least 25K in a blue hub. Better yet, if you still have the Eaton, put ~20k in it, we have had great results from them.

Hey Kevin, would you recommend going to 30k, with a blue hub in my black truck ? I think I am at 12 or 14k now.

Sure, try it, don't see any downside. Haven't yet found the totally happy spot on the blue hub, some S/C rigs are running 50K.

Excellent. Thank you.

I did not read the entire thread but I am gathering that the comparison photos in the first few pages are comparing a black hub clutch to a blue hub? Is the blue hub the newer design? My 80 came to me with a black hub clutch. I have no complaints about cooling and my clutch engages causing the fan to make noticable noise at idle once it's warmed up just idleing in my driveway. What I a think i read above is that thicker oil is commonly run in the blue hub clutch due to its internal design.

What, if any, differences or cooling improvements did you notice after going to the 15k oil?

Based on others I would say yes. But when i did mine I had a slough of heating issue, so rebuilding the clutch was part of it, couldn't say.

If I'm having no overheating issues (never seen the truck above 195, and rarely above 180), is there any good reason to do this mod? We're in Florida, so it couldn't hurt, right? And how does this compare to an aux fan on the radiator? Is both better?

My instinct says you are fine and if your stock system is keeping those numbers its doing its job and wouldn't bother with aux fan.

The aux fan would be for A/C - we've heard that in JDM models, it comes on with the A/C. And sometimes, when idling to escape the midday heat in one of Florida's many fine state parks, the vents can get a bit warmer than we like.

Anyone have any issues with the o-ring / gasket getting stretched during this process? I can only think that it happened when I separated the two sides to drain. I haven't touched it until I went to put it back together and now it is way too big. Is it safe to assume that this is not replaceable?

I have some "Right Stuff" Gasket maker, would this work as an alternative?

See pic below for pic

Wow, that's the one that came off, huh? Don't know if a little mineral oil will help or not. It seemed to with the little bit I had to deal with, but not sure here.

I doubt gasket maker is going to help in this application. Gotta remember that centrifugal force is at work, trying to force the oil fill out whenever the engine is turning. You gotta have a good tight seal.

Wow that's a ton of reading! I got through a portion of it and will keep reading, but is it necessary to mod the blue clutch? Any of you just bolting it up out of the box and seeing improvements over the stock clutch?

Blue clutch was a stock clutch, depending on year. So blue compared to what stock clutch?

Smitty , let the clutch cool thoroughly and work the I-ring in place by compressing the I-ring from both sides of the clutch starting at one side and work around it.

Supra. I think it's a waste of time to just bolt one up out of the box . And doing a drain and fill is only marginally better than that

I think he's talking about whatever one is in the truck right now...

If the existing clutch is no longer working properly then you will see improvement right out of the box.

Gotcha.

Actually the stock clutch in my '97 LX has the unpainted hub. I didn't have any cooling problems with the original equipment (original water pump, fan clutch, thermostat, and radiator), but purchased the new unit (blue) along with a 93/94 radiator, water pump, thermostat, and blue clutch as preventative maintenance.

Rick,

I will give that a shot once everything cools. I had actually put the I ring in the fridge hoping for some constriction. I hope it works but there is A LOT of excess I ring right now.

Thanks!

Smitty
