Perhaps the head was not cracked to begin with?

How's a guy to know

a cracked head has no core value, I would not think Toyota sells remaned heads even if it was not cracked, if you bought a new head then there is no core charge anyway

I doubt there is anything fishy going on besides the service guy did not want to bother to go through your inspection and told you something to make you go away

I tend to totally trust everyone but man this story started off bad and it is starting to get much much much worse...nothing adds up here, like RT stated, there is no core value to a cracked head - if there was they should have simply fixed the head for YOU not for the next person who purchases a replacement head. Second, there should be no core cost anyway if you purchased new parts like that. Third, like Robbie wrote, it is required that they show you the head. Fourth, you just spent 3G's at this frickin place and they wont show you the head despite all the above reasons to do so??? Fifth, at this point man you are getting a**fisted and you need to go on the offensive. Seriously, someone knows someone who wanted or needed a 1fzfe head and then you roll in, it is like random crime except it specifically screwed you which takes the random out of it, at least to you! Like I wrote, I tend to trust and I complacently go along as long as I can go along but when the trust factor is violated, man o man do I turn to attack mode...I would phone the BBB, the GM of the dealer, the Toyota customer satisfaction line, the local attorney general. I'm not joking, I would go total offensive at this point. If they really did ship that thing to toyota, then they really did screw the pooch, this whole procedure may get comped out for you. HTH

I wouldn't be surprised if they just cleaned up the head, put a new head gasket on, and put the same head back on. :o

Well, Toyota Corporate actually chipped in for 30% of the parts - $700. So total bill - $3,020.00
Se la Vie and out.

So when Toyota said they would pitch in 30%, was this via the dealer or did you hear it direct from Toyota? Any paper work to that effect?

I'd start to wonder about that statement as well. Sorry but sometimes I get sceptical.

I've worked for Toyota and you're getting hosed IMHO.

Look at the head after you get the bill and see how dirty it is, if it looks any bit dirty I would call them on it and Have them pull the valve cover and see how clean it is in side. As for the parts you have the right to see the part, There is no why that the head got sent out that quick, stuff usually sets around for a couple of weeks at the dealer ships around here. You have the right to challange the bill by them not showing you the parts, if they can not produce the parts. This really does not go well with professional bussiness practices. I think you are getting the royal screw. later robbie

139k and going w/o a blown gasket on my 40th :flipoff2:

keep u posted ever 1k miles

some of the time toyota/lexus won't even ask for the parts back, esp if it's unusable to them after being returned - and even then they never issue the order to send it back to them, we end up throwing them out

Is it irrational for this thread to scare the crap out of a prospective '97 buyer?? At least I know now to watch the temps like a hawk!

acf,

It is rational to follow the forum's advice on the cooling system. You were told to make that your first priority on a vehicle that is new to you and has an unknown service history. EVERYTHING else is irrational.

-B-

Roger that. Fortunately, the one I'm considering buying has a documented service history. Has 100K miles but the "90k service" has not been done. Those items are job 1 if/when I purchase the vehicle.

acf, just buy a 3FE and enjoy the extremely enjoyable, dependable, and slow driving style that all 3FE owners enjoy.

Of course, I just blew a radiator a few months back....hehe
