I thought canadian 25 yr or less were inadmissable into the us, is it registered now?

If it was manufactured for the North American market and imported/sold as new by a dealer in Canada or the US, it can be exported into either country regardless of age.

Note: I took a wrong turn at the 80 forum... that's why I'm here. :D

turbo and spring it over with 60 axles like lowenbrau
Find a ff rear throw the locker in sell the front for another rear and put that in the front.

either way IMHO you'll want more than ome for 35-37's

here's another
Cruiser Outfitters

I'm going to keep it SUA for now. Doing some measurements in the shop and I'm not sure I like how high it will be after a SOA. Now I need to giddy up so we can take it to CM08

A Picture Says A Thousand Words

Perhaps I can be of some assistance. I will gladly send you some pics of my modded '85 BJ70. Please pm me your email address. I feel that I have a capable wheeler for most applications, without compromising the on road characteristics.

Therefore, my suggestion is

OME medium kit
ARB bullbar
8274 winch (not mounted in my pics)
surco safari rack
33X10.5 BFG MUDS
ARB air Lockers
AXT turbo kit
Hella lamps
Silvania silverstars

This set up should take you anywhere and back again. Having said that, I have seen custom SOA, 4 link renditions of CDN spec 70's that make me drool too.

Justin

Justin's recipe is an excellent one, but I would recommend opting for OME heavys, at least up front. The ARB bar and 8274 WILL make your medium emus sag.

60 series axles would be sweet but there are issues getting the passenger (short side) spring mounts in there cause of the diff offset (see lowenbrau's build). The extra width would be nice though. Not sure about 80 series axles, would be way cool to retro fit coils. I disagree on the comment about the 80 series axles and e-lockers being weak. Now I havn't seen one apart but there are a lot of e-locked 80's rolling on 315's (35's) out there. Those trucks weigh a lot more than a 70 and have more power than a 3b-t and you don't here about premature failures.

The e-locker does not necessarily fail all that often. The problem is that when it fails, you cant remove the diff from the housing because the short shaft breaks in a bad way.

BTW the e-locker is the same as a cable locker - just the actuation is different.

my comments about the 80-series axles was specific to two potential problems they present; and those exist on the 80 and on a vehicle they might be retrofitted to like a 70-series.

as lynchmob stated, the issue with the e-locker mechanism is when an axle shaft breaks while the locker is engaged (which is most likely when it would occur). additionally, the electric actuator motor for the e-locker is notorious for not functioning when any moisture or contaiminents get into the housing, which is pretty likely. sure they can be rebuilt, but anyone that has operated a truck with ARB's or cable lockers and then been in an 80 and seen the intermittent behavior of the e-lockers can appreciate that.

and I'd say there are a lot of 80's rolling around on 35's that are never really on a trail ;)

the biggest issue with using the 80-series axles on a truck that you'd want to run a "high steer" set up is the knuckles on the 80. If you take the time to inspect them you'll see that the knuckle housings have the steering arms mounted on the bottom and the housing itself is a lot thinner with less material on the top. getting steering arms mounted on the top of those knuckle housings is not trivial. Check Christo Slee's site for what he has made available. OTT had made similar arms, as have the Aussies. the bottom line is that it is a lot of work to make those knuckles work for high steer and questionable whether it's worth all that trouble.

my 2 cents sell the 60 and the 80 stuff. I would do what bj70 guy and Justin said ome heavy, arbs and 33,s plus the turbo a 4 inch lift 33s and locked front and rear you cant go wrong. I know that mine is a 74 but the same works for a 70 it makes an exellent off road and it is still streetable. In a couple of days my ARB bull bar and 24 volt winch will be on. For me I dont think I can do much more.

Nice 7* Series

Yeah I think we are going to go with the less is more approach. I'm getting the turbo manifold ordered this week. Looking to source a turbo now.

The lift, lockers, and tires are in the waiting until I want to pull the trigger.

ps. I see fantom's 60 in the background. Met him last weekend

I think you're going the correct route with the mild modifications. I'm far from a purist, but it doesn't seem right to bastardize such a clean, rare (in the US) vehicle. If 70's were more readily available, I would probably feel differently.

Here is what I have so far...

Ha not really, she wants a rig to wheel at Cruise Moab this year. Rule#1 If she ain't happy you ain't happy.

Picked up some used 17" wheels from a customer this weekend. They fit great on the 70!
