Biggest baddest radiator...

Having some overheating issues. Taking the radiator out to have it cleaned and boiled out.... Or whatever you do to a radiator.

If I wanted to replace it, what's the biggest baddest replacement I could get and fit in the stock mount?

Brand and/or part number so I'll know what to ask for. And do I get it from a radiator shop?

I'm no expert by any means. If I recall correctly, you have a standard 2F and the normal OEM style radiator should be more than adequate. Most rad shops can order a replacement that will be fine. You can also go stainless or Toyota OEM. When I replaced my I just went with an aftermarket OEM style one, haven't had a problem since. If your rad was gunked up your block might be too, might need an entire flush. My 0.02.

Replacement radiator

I'm no expert either but I just replaced my original radiator. I wanted to keep the stock look so I retained the original top and bottom tanks but got a new core. I found out that not all cores are created equal. You can get an automotive core with the zig-zag fins between each row of cooling tubes or you can get an industrial core (like the original OEM radiator) with each fin running all the way accross the radiator perpendicular to the cooling tubes. The radiator shop told me the industrial core design gives an additional 20% or more cooling capacity compared with the same size automotive core.

In addition, my newly rebuilt radiator has four rows of cooling tubes, one more row than the stock radiator's three rows of tubes. I don't know how much the additional row adds to the cooling capacity because I don't recall if the cooling tubes on the new core are smaller or the same size as the OEM radiator cooling tubes.

What type of fan are you running?

Are you running air conditioning?

Any pictures of your set up?

Newly rebuilt 2F. New water pump. New thermostat. New hoses. No AC. Electric fan (could be part of the problem).

I thought thermostat was 180 but this summer I ran hotter and would get over 200 if I sat in traffic for a few minutes.

Search eBay. I just bought a 4 row aluminum unit for under $200. I believe it's a Champion. Search around here. I read some good reviews on it. It was basically a drop in replacement except for having to drill 1 hole for the mount and trim just a tad off the bottom of my shroud.

Truck is a 71 but motor is a 79 2F. Would they have used the same radiator? No idea if the PO that swapped the motor changed the radiator or not.

Running a 180 thermostat, 4-row radiator and 8-blade direct drive plastic fan from Mark's Off Road.[818 953-9230] Stays under 185 even in 100 plus outside temps.

I recall something about the radiators having different mounts - certainly, the F and 2F fan shrouds are different in size and they have different mounts

i had one friend believe i would pay him 100 dollars for every corvair radiator he got me. Any condition was fine. it took awhile for him to figure it out

I took my 3 row to radiator shop. He said it did not need another row or cleaning. Did notice however that the electric fan was rubbing the fins. There's my noise. Maybe kept it from turning fast enough also. Put some spacers on it.

I installed twice because forgot the shroud the first time. Filled it up. Idles in the garage for 30 minutes and sat at 185. Took 20 minutes to get to temp. Only 50 degrees outside so I'll have to try when we get to 110 in the summer. But it's a problem I'm calling fixed for now.
