A bit of a rant and asking you guys for advice here.

For the past 8 or 9 months after acquiring my 2020HE, I have been running KO3s installed by the Toyota dealer I bought the car from. Always been great, rotated, no problem balancing, relatively quiet for an AT, all good traits I became used with when previously using KO2s. Have not had the opportunity yet of ridding them in off-road trails - will do next month on a planned trip to Big Bend.

This past week, I left work to pick up lunch at a near restaurant and on my way back driving on the highway, warning light pops up and passenger rear tire light starts displaying dropping pressure - 40 to 35 to 33 to 25 and so on. I take an exit ramp, turn into a back street and stop. Pressure still dropping. Got out of the car, went to look and see a slice in the tire and air gushing out to a point where it stopped at zero. Long story short, called my insurance, put the spare and head to Discount tire. When I get there, the guys confirmed my expectation, damaged beyond repair. Tire was sliced on the wall, air gushing out.

I was surprised by that, since I am running the E-rated 285/65/18s KO3s. So, supposedly, 10 ply, strong sidewall, etc...and I get a sliced wall driving at 65mph on the highway? Normal? Even the guys at DT, were like puzzled with this outcome in such a strong and meaty tire. They suggested I ran next to a very sharp piece of debris or even a knife blade on the highway. Either that or someone did not like my car and decided to gut my tire with a pocket knife. Although possible, I do not think the latter was the case, since the pressure only started dropping after I was already driving for a good 8 minutes or so.

My questions:

1 - Your opinion about what happened and are the KO3s E-rated not as strong as the KO2s? Should I be concerned using them on my next trip to Big Bend?

2 - On terms of replacement. I have already about 4500 miles on the other 3 tires. I was planing on buying a cheapo AT to replace the 60 profile OEM spare. Should I now, use the other rear tire as spare and replace both rear tires at a sligtly increased cost, as opposed to just replacing the damaged tire with a brand new one? Would there be any meaningful difference between a brand new and a 4500 mile KO3 that would justify evening out both sides?

Pic below. Sadly I did not get a good pic of the actual slice damaging the tire.

with all the widely publicized vehicle vandalism in the past month (tesla), i wouldnt be surprised if an eco warrior thought poorly of your vehicle choice. pure speculation on my part but hey even priceless art is being targeted these days.

Slices can sometimes take a while to fail.. Its happened to me before, where I cut it out on the trail somewhere and didn't notice it until I was airing up.. when it let go at just about full pressure.

4500 miles on the rear tire, I'd just replace the one tire with another KO3 if it were me.. but YMMV..

Sounds like vandalism as a cause, but I can't really give a great opinion with the photo supplied. Road Debris is a possibility, but seems less likely.

I wouldn't be worried about 4,500 miles of variation from relatively new tires. I'd replace the destroyed one, and I'd keep a spare of the same variety (personal preference, and certainly not without additional cost).

The crap that is out on the road way is the likely cause. Especially if hit at high speed. Does not matter how beefy the tire. Replace the tire and the spare with two of the same tire and do a five tire rotation.

Put the new tires on the front as they will wear slightly more due to braking. Take the two fronts and make the one with the most wear the spare. Put the other on the rear. Then do the five tire rotation.

It's not a matter of if but when as it pertains to incidentals with tires. Even the beefiest ones. And shouldn't reflect on the KO3s. That's why [most] cars have spares.

I think it's a great idea to replace the pair on the axle and move the slightly worn good one as a spare.

Thank you all for perspectives. Looks like a split between road hazard and vandalism. Does not really matter much, but I will certainly be more on the lookout when I go pick up my lunch at that place. ;)

Insurance? Or tire hazard coverage?
Of course not, right? When you do not buy is when you need it. Since my other tires were pretty new, DT let me add to all when buying the new one, so I now have the tire coverage and obviously will probably not use anytime soon. Murphy's law is a reality.

Yes. I will probably go this route. Will add about $200 bucks to my total, as opposed to going with the cheapos. Unfortunately, I can't really do five tire rotations because I only have 4 HE wheels, and the spare is a regular Base 200.

The spare on HE’s isn’t matching? Wtf.
Tip for next time: even though they are the same company I still buy tires from Tirerack. Their replacement coverage is great. Caught a drill bit in the sidewall of a Pilot Sport 4S, took a picture, they cut me a check and reimbursed the replacement cost no questions asked. Not as quickly gratifying as buying through discount but I also don’t have to pay for replacement certificates.

Tire rack and Discount are the same company?

I used Discount for years until I was fed up with their BS, at least around here. I used Tire Rack now and interestingly most of the shops they recommend for installs are Firestone.

As for cause, vandalism is reaching, especially trying to tie it into the Tesla thing. Easily could’ve been a curb rash that blew when the tire heated up.

i generally 'know' when something has hit my truck while driving, even a small acorn on the roof, let alone something big enough that would cause an entire slash and failure of a new e rated truck sidewall. sure it's possible. but if i haven't felt or heard anything hit the truck while driving then damage by a third party either through accident or intent would PERSONALLY be my number one thought. also, 'tesla vandalism' has moved onto other makes and models, buildings, charging stations, people, street signs, bus shelters (you name it) especially in my home state of maryland where austerity in dc has really hit our local economy and there are plenty of people intent on making a statement.
trust me it's real (and hardly a stretch) so be careful out there and keep your eyes open.

Let's see a close-up pic of the damage.

99.999% chance it was something on the road. My job puts me out on major roadways walking around all the time. It is downright alarming how much s*** that can not only ruin a tire, but kill someone in a car behind said tire, is only three inches from where tens of thousands of tires pass at high speed every day.

Sure some people may be able to feel when they run over a flea, but what if that flea was right at a joint in the road? Yoda couldn’t do that.

Just be glad it didn’t fully blow out, risking loss of control. End of day the tire did exactly what it was supposed to do.. keep the occupants safe.

my coopers still looked and measured practically new after 5000 miles. I would say since you don’t have a matching spare wheel go ahead and replace the rear and then buy a used k02/k03 from a local used tire shop or eBay. Should be about 100 bucks or so.
