I'm looking at purchasing new 33" mud terrains for my truck right now, because with it being my daily driver I'd like new non dry rotted tires. Discount tire has a rebate right now that goes through tomorrow i'm looking at.

I have narrowed it down to two options, The BFG KM2 in 33x12.5x15 for $180 a tire, or the Falken Wildpeak M/T01 for $185 a tire.

I think the BFG's would would look better on my truck visually but the Falkens i have heard have much stronger sidewalls.

Anyone have any experience wheeling on either of these tires?

I have the 33x10.50x15 on my 40 - I've got KM2s on all 3 of my Cruisers actually. Do I know how they compare to the Falkens? no. In fact my tall skinnies are probably so different than the 12.50's that my opinions probably don't actually matter......

carry on.....

BFG says there’s not even a question here. Now, I’ve not looked at the Falken’s but if you say KM2...I’m sure there’s nothing near the price (that isn’t a major off road brand) that’s as decent all around...unless Falken has somehow figured how to make a MT good in the rain/snow/ice.

Toyo open country MT’s have tougher side walls than BFG’s. They are also 20 percent heavier (and usually more expensive) than the comparably sized BFG. Toyo’s are great tires. BFG’s are great tires too. Falkens? No clue.

So at that price point the KM2s and the Falkens are the only name brand tires. I know a lot of people are die hard BFG, but their sidewalls seem to be awful.

I’ve heard of no issues with BFG sidewalls. I’ve heard about uneven wear and cupping though. Gotta say I’m really enjoying my new General grabber X3’s though. I’ve really missed having a good MT. Good luck with your decision.

I’ve been running falken tires since high school. I currently have the 35’s M/T01 on my 80, I’ve had them on for the last 10k. They are a great tire. The sidewalks are super stiff though; I end up running around 10psi to get enough flex in the sidewalk.

I also just put a set on AT’s on my 100. I also have K02’s on my 4Runner

Falken does not advertise like the big boys but they do a lot of research before coming out with new tires. They also seem to be late to the market because of this. I believe them to be every bit as tough as the BFG’s. I will say the BFG’s do look better, but it wasn’t a reason for me to spend $60 more a tire

Those are both good tires, BFG would have a stronger sidewall of the 2. Firestone MT2 are worth a look, we tested those side by side on about 30 Rubicons (1/2 of them with each tire) on the same trail system, and Firestone did the same and sometimes better than BFG. Better in side hill traction.

But then again, join Thread Lightly and get the Falken discount, pretty decent tires.

@AJR I consider Falken a namebrand but a newcomer. They do sponsor ultimate adventure and are fairly present in the offroad racing scene. That’s sbout all the backing I have though.

This was 2006, Falken was a big name in the racing circuits back then too. And not just because of the Falken umbrella team, I have never seen the BFG umbrella team. Falken has been making high end and specialty tires for a while.

My car is 2 down from the silver m3 down the track, this was at Road ATLANTA, Super Street magazine article, private race thing.

I had Falken's on my 1985 MR2 back in 1987.

Can’t speak on the m/ts but if they are anything like the A/ts I would think they would be solid, I’ve gad the at3s on my Tacoma for about a year and some change and they are awesome, had them in the sand and snow so far and impressed with both.

Maybe just go all in for some km3s.....
