99.9% sure black was never stock..........

My white 77 has a black bezel. I had assumed it was the stock color.

When I was grinding off several layers of paint from my '66 bezel I hit a base colour that was very off white, but I don't think it was quite tan. Who knows though since paint fades, it may have started off like your new one.

So, if black was not a stock color for a 77, anybody have a guess as to what it was? Am in the proces of doing a ground up and want to return to stock. What's the right color? The tan pictured in John's bezel above?

Judging by the variations we've seen, and the variations in the color of the instrument cluster bezels we've seen as per Mark's post (on Pirate, I think) I wonder if the color codes mean a whole lot.

I would go with an off white for a 77.

I work for Toyota at the Tundra plant in Indiana, and just from the picture it looks just like our body parts that are shipped out to repair shops. The gray color comes from the DB coating ( a rust proofing step in our paint dept.). As I said it looks just like it in the picture but it would be all over the bezel as the parts are dipped in a large tank of this liquid. It does look like a painted piece when it comes out.

on the back side its not fully painted(its paint for sure) and you can see the black where its not fully painted(the color of the front)

And its tan(ish) not gray at all(to my eyes)

and made in Japan..................not Indiana(sorry just sorta kiddin) :D

It looked like primer to me, until you showed the backside. Lots of our sheet metal comes in a primer that looks like that shade.

I ment to show the backside earlier........sorry.....

now you can see why I was pretty sure.

the chrome bumperettes I got have a coating(like paint) on the inside of the "hoop"

Does anyone have a picture of an off-white color bezel? John mentioned this as the best alternative for the resto I'm doing on my 77 white fj-40.
