yes i know a lot of m416 trailer owners match their vehicles tire and wheel combo to save space but my idea is to bring the trailer to a self sufficient trailer so it can be towed by any vehicle that i have. pics would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

How big a spare do you plan on having?

If it's one of those skinny little military-treaded tires, they can be fit underneath the trailer on a crank-up mount. That's the ideal location, because it's out of the way unlike every other location.

However, even though we're running what are typically considered "skinnies" on our rig, they're still too big for that to really work on our M101.

I used an old crank up mount and kept one of the old military tires for the spare.

What kind of crank up mount have you guys used?

My tire size would be 285/75/16 , I like the crank up idea. Might try this. Thanks

60 series spare tire carrier fits between the frame rails of a M416. I have the trailer and tire carrier just have figured out if I want it in front or rear of the axle. More room in the back just don't want to take any tongue weight off when runnig empty.

Don't forget to post some pics of it installed. A 60 series spare tire carrier would probably be very affordable and durable too.

The 80 series spare tire crank-up should also be close if the 60's will work.

I would like to see a 285 or similar sized tire mounted underneath a 1/4 ton, too. Since we're running 255/85 R16s, one of those should fit even better.

I first looked at this before putting the new tires on the trailer. Then, it didn't look like there would be enough clearance. Now that it's sitting higher, it looks like a 33" tire would hang so that the bottom of it would be around the same height as the clearance for the axle.

Thus, overall clearance would be affected little if at all. However, the rear departure angle will be lessened. It may not be enough to matter.

I bought a 4Runner style crank so that it would match my ...well 4Runner and I wouldn't need two cranks. You can fit up to a 295.75.16 aired up in either the front or the rear using the 2nd cross member in as the mount point. This idea hasn't taken shape just yet but I have the tire in position to give you an idea. Yes I know the clearance will be limited offroad, but since the idea for the trailer was to be a base camp for exploration it's capabilities do not have to match that of the 4Runner.

I'll get a better shot next week, but uninflated the tire could be sucked up more (this is how I fit the 295 on the 4Runner in the spare spot underneath).

My plan is to use the hole spare tire carrier. That allows me mount anywhere I want to the two main rails. The frame that the winch bolts to is wider than a crossmember and will help keep the tire stable. wedges on the front or back side depending which side of the axle I mount it on will help with aproach or departure.

Off the back is good, you can modify a jeep style swingout from eBay or take a peek at what Adventure Trailers offers and get a few more ideas. I was originally heading this route but remembered a bike rack and file would be hanging off the rear so the tire should go under the front.

I took a look at the trailer carrier today. The 60 series is a perfect width for the M416 bit it seats a lower than I like. But since I use mine on the highway quite a bit I will probably install it for know. To get it far enough back to clear the landing leg up front I need to unbolt the front spring hanger and had the front bolt spare the same hole as the back hole in the tire carrier. Then shim the other three hole of the spring hanger to match. Then just drill a hole on each side from the front hole in the carrrier. Using the trailer cross member would probably keep it up a little higher I don't like the idea of putting the tire weight on it.

The crank up mount that used came off of a 4runner that had been traded when they were doing cash for clunkers

If you don't need the tongue for extra storage this is a super easy and cheap way to mount it. I have had mine like this for several years with zero problems. It could be mounted even closer to the tub if I did not have the RTT on it.

I just went to Lowe's and bought some threaded rod and some bolts with large washers. Then just lined it up and drilled two holes into the tub.

I like mine on the back.

The only thing with the tire on the back is that it made the trailer back heavy. So I add some fuel cans to the front to off set the weight of the tire. (I wanted to do this anyway)
