If any of you have done a mod you now regret, please speak up, save me the time and money on doing something stupidor that i will be unhappy with later.

Putting a Toybox behind an SM420.

It's overkill. I would be happier if I chose an H55F transmission if I wanted to continue with the Toybox. I would still have low enough gears but would benefit from the 5th gear on the highway.

Best by far Disk Brakes
NV4500
Front and rear air lockers
Off Road Chains

Nice:
Oil Rig Air compresser
A6 Electroinc Ignition
327 w/roller cam (Fairly new install but I've
gotten 14mpg)

ToBeDone:
Disk Parking Brake (I've ordered)
Aluminum Body (I have had for TOO long)
custom skid plates

- Saginaw power steering
- ARB locker in front
- Metal Tech cage
- flip the rear springs
- on board air

In the near future
- ARB in the back in stead of the powertrax
- rear discs
- ORION

WOW so many with the Saginaw PS. Doesn't that option limit winch choices? I know it has a little more power than FJ60 PS. If an open front and 35's or smaller I feel FJ60 PS is the way to go. Once the front is locked though, hydro assist may be needed (working on that on mine).

For me the best single mod? I really can't single any 1 out. They all compliment each other.

From a safety standpoint I will agree that Disc brakes should be at the very top of the list, and a cage closely behind that. Make sure you are mounting that cage to solid sheetmetal and not swiss cheese. Or better yet tie it to the frame. Worth every extra penny you'll spend, especially when/if you roll and everyone is injury free, and you drive away from it.

"Best Mod" really is a personal call to each of us and how/where we drive and wheel.

-soa
-35 with beadlocks
-ps
-rock sliders are awsome

to do
new cage with new seats i have
skid plate.
more power to the ps.
etc

I thought there was only one winch choice? 8274-50. Why would you look anywhere else?

I have driven a cruiser with stock ps. Works well. BUt saginaw is the way to go. Cheap easy to find parts off the shelf.

Disk brakes all around would be my favorite. Being able to out brake a sportscar is classic.

Soon to add TBI. I'm sure it's going to top the list.

Saginaw power steering-start here, no question.

Fix all the stuff that leaks.

For trail ability--SM420--it rocks

Lockers

Tires 35 and up

Spring over axle-I held out a long time, but it's better.

Not on the list on purpose--rear disk brakes--nice, but unnecessary

My favorite mod is my Tuffy center console. Seriously. Tons of room to stuff all kinds of crap in - and lock it up, place for my CB, shelf for my phone and sunglasses and two functioning cupholders. I've had it for years and I still smile everytime I use it. :grinpimp:

DANG!!! This thread is over a year old!!! I posted back in 2/05 so I'll add my recent mods on for continuity sake.

55 Rears
Dual Battery
New Retractable shoulder harness
Rear bench out of a YJ for my son
Roll bar mount storage basket
Rock lights

Still don't have my winch:rolleyes:

Please post a pic of your rear bench seat. I'd like to see it.

4WDB,PS,winch,cage etc. were all great additions, but the single best mod I did was s***canning the Holley on my 350 and installing an off-road modified Rochester. No more cutting out at the worst possible time, simple to maintain and noticable improvement in mpg.WINNER  Alex

my best mod so far would be getting rid of the stock drive plates and putting on locking hubs. Cheers to 67AZCruiser for the hubs. I can now sorta hear myself think while going down the highway.

My thread still lives?
The most recent mod I have done is to build an aluminum storage box that bolts up under my driver seat. I have quick open dzus fastners holding it closed and can really store a lot of crap in it.
The shell casing in the picture is a 30mm round from an A-10 warthog. It's not that the box is small, the shell is huge.

I also made this little box to fill in the gap where my radio had been removed. I got tired of looking at my wires through a rusty hole in my dashboard.
Steering shaft, shifters and heater have all been cleaned and painted since this picture.

13B-T diesel w/5spd. Hands down, best mod. Power, economy, runs upside down, etc. I drug my feet going into that swap, but would do it again in a heartbeat.

Next fav mod would be FJ60 power steering and moving my seat back 2".

When I got this 79 fj40 it had , breaker points dist, 4 drum brakes and no power steering.
I did the electronic ign (with the Toy distributor ,igniter, coil)
and added the minitruck power steering. I really liked that, a huge difference.
I made my rear to full floater using the same hubs as the front disc hubs with lockouts.
For me I don't run big tires so that worked well ,
I finished everything with 4 Toy discs.
I can drive this 40 on 4wd
rwd and fwd. It is nice.
I am in the process of installing a tow bar.
This tow bar is going to bolt to the knuckles to eliminate any trailing problems. Also
A locking diff from the fzj80 for the rear, I will be getting a cable conversion from downey and a locking diff from cruiserparts.net and rear shafts from dutchman.
Also a 3b will be goinginto this 40.
Maybe I will get some pics posted .
This is all supposed to be done this winter, but I have to find a garage to do this in first.
