I've been waging war on a tremendous clunk from the rear when I go over bumps. I keep ruling things out and I'm now up to new spring and shackle bushings.

This rear hanger was crushed by a rock. Originally it was folded over the spring but I managed to bend it back to flat. The hole for the pin, however, is still flattened. I'm no metalworker, so while I spent two hours with my torch, BFH, vise, clamps, etc etc I couldn't get it to come any closer to round.

What do you all think about doing the :hillbilly: thing and just grinding the pin to the same shape as the hole? Only the shoulder would need grinding...

i just did a spring swap on the back of my cruiser and i jsut welded a fender washer over that opening so i could run a regular 5'8" bolt through it.

You have the large bushing later springs, ie not the common small bushing usual FJ40 size.

I would get an FJ60 style hanger from Ruffstuff and one of his clever outboarding brackets. Then get the 1 3/8 bushings with the 5/8 hole and the wide shoulder from SOR or MAF. Install with 5/8 bolt and fixed forever. The Ruffstuff hangers and brackets are twice as thick as the stock pieces. It will be a nice upgrade for you.

Hanger: FJ60 Leaf Spring Hanger [0690140] - $31.00

Outboarder:Frame Outriggers 4.5" [0692200] - $50.00

I was just in his shop yesterday, and those new outboarding brackets are the shizzle. I wish they had been available when I built my 40, it would have saved me some major work.

If you don't weld, get this welded by a pro. It's pretty important.

Grinding the shoulder probably isn't the best idea but it'll either work or you'll find out later that it didn't, might be worth a try in a pinch. I can't believe you can't beat the thing into submission. How big's your hammer?

I've been looking into replacing my outriggers too. Drew, I'm having a hard time visualizing just how those ones from Ruff Stuff would actually mount up. Any one have pics of one installed?

well, maybe I'm just a :princess:. I'm using a 4 pounder, but its hard to get room to swing from the top, this is under the fender obviously. Its also hard to get good and hot, lots of metal here pulling heat away, my MAPP gas torch can't get it to turn red.

Drew, I thought the later style bushings and hangers were desirable? Why would you go with a 5/8 pin and the 60 hangers? The shoulder on my stock bushings IS the wide shoulder (.265") and the stock pin is only slightly bigger than 5/8" (11/16").

(Honestly, I'm probably not going to this route; I don't weld, and I have a leaky radiator thats already claimed my next $200. Appreciate it though.)

I have pics of his brackets installed before those outriggers became available. Basically the outrigger mounts to the frame, and the hanger is then mounted in the proper position to the Outrigger. It's very cool and trick, with the metal all formed in one piece.

I'll be out at Dan's shop in a week or so, and I can put them together and post a pic if I remember.

Hey,
Ghetto engineering to the resque! Get some round stock the diameter of the unbent hole, bore a hole the size of a bolt that will thread into the shackle threaded portion. Now grind an end to fit into the crushed end of the spring hanger, grab the round stock with a big pipe wrench and torque it till the sucker is round. If the pipe wrench is too hard, hook a come along and crank away.

Two hours with a torch, huh? Walk away slooowly from your Cruiser. Heat is your freind, lots of it.

Ok, that makes sense. Pics would be great too.

Hot. I did the same thing once (Hanger that is) I put heat to it a used a tail pipe expander to reshape the hole. It worked great.
But it appears you got it fixed.
