I've been asking questions about the whole front end and Im told that rebuilding it is a serious, undertaking. (Not meant for rookies). I really do believe and respect those comments. . . . . but . . . . . Im curious . . . . . I don't know what the inside of an axle housing looks like, and I'd really like to know. I don't know how an axle works . . . . . I'd like to find out. So - I've been toying with the idea of taking it apart. Im hoping that the parts inside are undamaged and if they are then all I need to replace is the housing. (I phoned T.A.P. a used Toyota parts yard in Rancho Cordova and they have the entire front end for $1,200). But since Im spending canadian dollars plus shipping, tax and all that, Im wondering if I can't save myself a few dollars by attempting to rebuild it myself. Plus it will satisfy my curiosity. Perhaps you know of a site on the net that provides a detailed do-it-yourself guide? Or, if you've re-built a front end, will you share some tips of advice for me? - Thanks

I don't believe you could straighten that axle housing back to spec, but maybe someone else has an idea. TAP doesn't have the best rep, I would try locally, 'mud classifieds, or some of the vendors here on mud: http://www.ih8mud.com/ads.php#banners

That's way too much for that axle! There is one on http://www.car-part.com/ for $350. Also check the parts for sale forum here on Mud.

Good luck with the project. I think you have done great so far. In my opinion the mechanical work is far easier to get right than the body work. And it looks like you have done a decent job with the sheet metal so far.

In the FAQ in the maintenance, there is an entire thread on rebuild of the front axle, short the diff removal/replacement. But that parts is fairly easy.

You would be better off to get other parts or a new axle, at least the short side. On my 40, I had an axle that I couldn't see the bend with the naked eye, but it was a real problem driving.

Do you have a Factory Service Manual, thats a must for a lot of the things your going to do. I use that in conjunction with FAQ items and posts here. That way I see it from two perspectives and it makes it easier to undertaken something I have never done before.

For the life of me I don't understand this but that's not new for me and women.

Where do you live in the great white North?

I think that there is a 93 cruiser in a yard in the next town. It was a roll job and a lot of stuff has been picked off of it. But if memory serves the axle housing is still there and it's not a locked one. Housing only, it's been picked clean.

Now I have a trip to Upper NY next week. I'm going about half way between Albany and Rochester. If by some strange chance your in the Niagra area we could work something out.

You mentioned a trip to get parts already but I'm not sure where that puts you on the map.

Landtank . . . what is it that you don't understand? Maybe I can help.

As to my location. . . . well, Im pretty far away from Niagra. It's about 3 and 1/2 days on the train/bus. I'm hoping that if I have to go down into the States it can be relatively close to home. Home is in B. C. about 6 hours north of Wenatchee, Seattle. During the week I will follow up on the leads that the guys gave me in the thread. Hopefully I will be able to find a fair deal on a housing. The shell that you were talking about, does the city of Vernon ring a bell to you? Vernon is close to where I live, and an auto wrecker has a housing there but he's outrageous! He wants $700.00 just for the shell. I find that a bit insulting.

Hey Landtank . . . . thanks for taking an interest. You've been encouraging. - 2oyo2a :)

need parts?

In listening to all of the chatter, you have some good advice comming in. In my opinion, rebuilding a front axel is not that hard if you have good parts. I've done it on trail several times. $1200 seems a bit too high for a front end. I have a front axel off my 95' that I replaced with a locked one. I have the third member listed on rocky mountain extreme for $400 and since you sound like your in a jamb I'd give ya the housing for $100 (I'll even clean it for ya so you can just start assembling the parts). By the way my 80 had 115,00 at the time of the swap.

Ry-guy . . . . I've been staring at this empty page for so long now. Im dumbfounded and speechless. I don't know what to say. Your offer is more than fair. It's down right kind. I'm very much in need of taking you up on your offer. However, at this point I don't know if I need a whole new front end, or if I can get by with just the axle housing. . . . .

Probably wondering why someone would spend $12k on a rig that will be worth $4k when it is all fixed up.

There should be sources in the Pacific NW for parts. I know I have seen mention of a junkyard that specialized in Toyotas and had a fair amount of 80 series parts, located in the Seattle area. Maybe someone that remembers the name will pipe up.

With a housing that bent I really doubt that there is no damage to in the inner axle shafts and/or birfields and side gears in the third member.

Only way to know is to take it apart. You've got nothing to lose, but don't expect much good inside there.

hi 2oyo2a

welcome to the forum. i'm in vancouver.

avoid that wrecker in vernon. he's a gouger and i've seen the 93 he has in person. it had a bad roll. I would not trust the axle he has to be straight.

contact shelden at G&S cruiserparts http://www.gscruiserparts.com last i heard he was the one who bought nickw's lightly rolled 1991 japanese diesel hdj81. that truck is in good mechanical condition in need of a body. your truck looks like a suitable donor and shelden has already done a diesel swap into a north american 80. If i were you i'd see if you could pay shelden to build you a diesel or sell him what you have.

if you are bound and determined to do this understand that a 92 is going to be a big disappointment power wise when you are done. you are going to have to rebuild the whole front end plus do motor work and body work. at the end you will have a gutless truck. you can get a much more powerful 93+ 80 in running condition in the us for less than this will cost you and a 91-92 runner for much less. if you need help importing one, pm me and I'll tell you how to go about it.

honestly, you are wasting your time. plan C would be to sell it to the wrecker. he is always after landcruisers so he'll give you something.

but if you are bound and determined, then don't dispair. there are a number of 80 owners in BC. if we can help, we will try.

Ry-Guy: I'll be in touch with you, one way or the other about that housing you have.
