I am looking into converting my 67 FJ40 split bench into bucket seats. Looking for a clean way to do the mounting conversion as well as recommendations on buckets that fall nicely into place in the space. BTB makes a bracket but they claim it fits 69 to 78. Anybody?

I installed 74 FJ40 bucket seats in my 68 more than thirty years ago. I still maintained my tool box. I had to trim the side of the tool box on the inside for the a seat bracket and used a support bracket off a hard top to move the driver's left front seat bracket outside the tool box.

Hi, I've put bucket seats in both my 40 & 55. I'd say it's a great way to learn welding if you were interested.
I'd start out with the seats and then think about fabricating a frame. The toyota corolla or other model seats seem to work well. I also like the CRV seats too. The nice thing about doing your own is that you get to dial in what you want for your comfort zone. It's also pretty cheap to pick up seats from the wrecking yard and the metal is pretty cheap too. Good luck, ty

It's not a big job, I just cut down the width of the bracket.

Procar makes adaptor brackets to fit onto the existing seat bases using their buckets. Another option would be overlandwerks.com

Are these bracket for a bench seat? The passenger seat does not have a removable mounting bracket.

That is the bucket seat bracket not bench seat. You would need to source the bucket seat mounting brackets and still make the mods I mentioned to make it work on a pre 73.

On the website they are listed as 70-73. http://procarbyscat.com/adapters

I was not aware that the earlier seat mounts were different.

Could show a link to a picture of for the 70 to 73? Your links shows a universal adapter which not any better than starting from scratch. I clicked on Toyota and it brought up a bunch model with parts number but I could find a way to go any further. I do know 73 was bucket seats not a bench seat. Bench has a tool box under the left seat to deal with while the buckets don't. Their chart didn't make sense to be either 96 4Runner would fit 91-96 and 96-02:confused: FJ40 74-7/75:confused:

When I got my 72 it had the "seat cores" in it but no upholstery. Sor lists the same cores from 63-9/72. I spoke with procar customer service and they said that part numbers 81598 and 81599 would bolt to these cores and would adapt their seats to work in my 40. That's one option that I will be using when the time comes for seats. Another option would be the Overlandwerks kit which I am leaning towards for the better seat option.

I would rather have a bench personally...

I did the conversion on my '70 40...kind-of. The PO converted it to Datsun 280Z seats long ago but the seats were trashed. I needed new seats. I cut down the passenger side seat frame to fit a bucket and mount an ammo can console. I welded tabs to attach the sliders. On the driver's side the tool box lid was removed and I used Springtail Solutions brackets for the driver's seat. The seats are from a Honda Prelude. Be aware that due to the gas tank under the passenger seat it will likely sit higher than the drivers seat.

I have another set of Springtail brackets. If you want them, you can have them for $75 plus shipping. PM me and let me know.
