I have a penchant to learn how to rebuild these motors and then bench-run them before installing in one of my rigs. Then rebuild the engine that came out.

First: I need a long-block with the accessories. Have been looking, but cannot find one for reasonable price.
Second: Has anyone managed to build a stand and start one of these outside the motor?

Is this a crazy idea?

I've got two motosr but honestly no interest in shipping. They should not be that hard to find. Reasonable price is obviously subjective and open for debate. I will say my turn key full rebuild ran me about $16K parts and labor in 2019 if that helps with any of your decsions.

How much did you pay for the motors (before rebuild)?

I bought a complete parts truck for $2500 and a full drivetrain for $1200. Both had reported blown HG. I had a one motor rebuilt while I continued to drive my 80 then my builder did the engine swap in 72 hours so my truck was not down for an extended time. One of the motors I have sitting is my original but its broken down for entertainment purposes.

One option may be to take it to a race shop and let them dyno it for you. There should be places in the Charlotte area equipped to cover a lot of what it would take to mount up a 1FZFE though I assume you'd have to bring some parts and possibly setup a harness, etc. The cost for shop time to do this a few times may be less than building out the full rig yourself, though that's a guess.

Buy a running parts rig.

Do a front-end chop and strip down to frame. Add casters. Mount a 5 gallon tank with external fuel pump. Build a panel with gauges.

There you go, a rolling test bed ready to easily install and remove a 1Fz for testing. Cooling system and all.

Would be about 4’x6’ footprint

It would actually be a fun project and selling off some parts would recoup some costs.

The parts rig engine really doesn’t need to function as you want to rebuild anyways.

A "running parts rig" is a unicorn around here.

I’m sure, but “here” is not the only market!

As I said, it doesn’t have to be running, a blown head gasket, totalled rear end, written-off damage as long as the frame is intact in the front.

It’s not rocket science and it’s not difficult to achieve.

It is actually the fastest and easiest way to do it.

Of course one cold build something but that takes skill and tooling to accomplish.

It’s an idea that is effective.

Great idea. Now trying to find a parts rig.

Giddy up, not my project, not wasting my time, just trying to help.

Negativity runs high in this thread🤦‍♂️

Building a stand to run the engine is a simple project if you can weld. Check out YouTube for examples of people making LS engine stands.
You can basically make a rectangular cage out of square tube and/or angle iron, add a battery to power the wiring harness and starter and put a fuel pump in a small gas tank. If you want to run longer than a few minutes you’ll have to add a radiator and hoses.

The problem is here is where we are.

? I apologize if it came across as negative. Was not the intent.
I conveyed that I am now actively looking for a parts rig. I think I found an engine though.

My apologies, I misread one word in your your post, yesterday was a bad day for me🤦‍♂️.

Best of luck in your venture🍻

Not a great pic, it's a screenshot grabbed from video.

I used unistrut for this one. Bolted together a basic frame, added casters.
Used a strut under each engine mount, and a bracket off the bellhousing.

This one, i wanted to be able to start it and run it up to temperature as it was in storage for a long chunk of time, so i set up the radiator for it too

Beauty of a diesel, it only needed 3 wires to start and run

I just considered this with my 1FZ rebuild. I decided the time to hack up a donor truck harness enough to make the engine run wasn't worth the effort, as I hope to not be rebuilding many more of these. (Although I have a 2nd in the pipe right now...)

If I were doing this in a shop repeatedly for paying customers, it could be beneficial.
