Believe it or not... I need a new engine.

Pulling my trailer and driving like a bit of an idiot, I tried to overtake another truck & trailer on a hill and a awful rattling noise began. The rattle turned to a knock and it's only getting louder. I've had it diagnosed by a friend (I believe he said it was a blown push rod) and according to him it is cheaper to buy a new engine than to rebuild it. And it's only at 160k!

I've had a shop quote me at $2200 CAD for the swap, just need to find an engine now! I'd really appreciate any help locating one, I've been looking around the Vancouver (B.C.) area and can't find anything. shipping the engine in is also an option if it's not too expensive. Thanks guys.

Not a push rod type engine. Overhead cams. That's all I got to offer.

The flux capacitor will sometimes short out if you spill your beer on the center console. Rattles like a coffee can full of marbles then.

I'd completely disregard your friends comments. Blown 2UZ engines are very rare. Not sure I've actually ever seen a confirmed post about one. Lots of people get horribly wrong diagnosis on these engines only to have it be something minor. It can handle towing uphill at full throttle for quite some time. Unless you ran out of oil I very much doubt you have rod knock or a bent rod or anything.

Diagnosing an engine by the sound it makes is a crap chute. Take it to a pro for an honest inspection. Hell, even take it two different places and don't tell them what the other said. You should get the same diagnosis. If not, keep searching for a decent mechanic.

Anecdote: I have towed a decent amount with my car. I use a phone app to watch all the vitals. Engine temp and oil pressure don't really move at all, even under sustained loads for a LONG time. Trans temp creeps up over time, but that engine is rock solid even at near redline for extended periods. If you have good oil and enough of it in the crankcase I wouldn't blink at towing max load at full throttle for minutes on end - been there, done that.

Any CEL lights on? Try revving the engine in park and listen for the knock and see if the sound changes or gets louder. I have used a mechanic stethescope to listen for sounds in the past, or use a long screwdriver placed next to your ear and put it on the engine. How is your coolant situation?

Right on that is hopefully the case! I couldn't believe that I had blown this invincible engine so maybe I didn't. I'll be sure to let you know the outcome. Thanks for the info!

All my fluids are good, but I like the stethoscope idea, I could pin point the location before I take it to a shop. Thanks

check the fan pulley it makes a hell of a noise and lots of them go out at the 160-180k range.

Maybe you cracked an exhaust manifold. An exhaust leak from a manifold can sound like a knock.

Hopefully it's not the engine. I had a knock sound coming from my engine (Audi S4) and my buddy thought it was a rod in the engine, but after diagnosis it turned out to be a broken water pump.

You figure if it's something wine g with the engine then a CEL will appear.

A friend of mine years ago had a Golf, he hit a snowbank, that jolt caused the timing belt to jump teeth, which caused the valves to gently tap the pistons, made one hell of a racket. Did not ruin the engine, but replacing the timing belt and resetting valve timing on a front drive car was not fun.

Maybe thats what happend with you? Hard throttle, weak t-belt tensioner and it jumped a few teeth? I do not know, just spit balling here.
