what was said about insurance and the aftermarket bumpers? and i get you with the whole air bag compliance.

Basically that if you were to rear end someone with a non-compliant airbag bumper, your up the creek without a paddle and that the insurance agency can easily throw out your claim or not back you in a law suit.

ouch!!!! ill stick with my ARB too then.

I don't want to start a debate. But from what Mike and I talked about over the phone today is that the ARB is much better for a low impact collision. The accordion mounts will absorb the impact and lessen the force transmitted into the cab/occupants, as well as reduce the amount of force that goes into the frame, this may destroy the mounts, but better than a tweaked frame IMHO. The Slee is a solid mount which means all the energy transmitted into the bumper will go straight to the frame and make a much more rigid impact, a 45* impact at low speed will transmit into the frame and possibly bend the front frame horns (debatable, but PM if you think differently, let's not de-rail this thread). This is regarding hitting a concrete/brick wall at low speed. The Slee bumper has many, many, many advantages over the ARB and vise versa. I would contact your Insurance company and ask about their policies on non airbag compliant bumpers. My buddy had a custom plate bumper on his JK Rubicon and ran into the back of somebody and the air bag didn't deploy in time. Injuring his passenger and himself. The claim was quite high (both totaled) and the insurance said he was on his own for repair and compensation. I don't remember the insurance company . It's the same concept with tinted windshields. If you rear end somebody with dark windshield tint they can get you for applying a "hinderance to night vision" and say your on your own. I have checked with mine and have a medical permit for that reason. The ARB has a huge overhang, but it's a very stout bumper. I would rather get hung up on it while playing on the rocks than sacrificing frontal protection. Especially in the area where I live with a lot of drivers pulling out in front of you and daily stop and go traffic where accidents are very common. Rear end collisions happen quite a bit on the roads of Atlanta, I don't want to risk having that happen and disabling my truck. I'll keep the protection at the cost of offroad capability. If you can place the ARB properly on obstacles you won't have many issues. I don't care if it's certified for anything on the rear, as for the front...DOT/SRS compilable for me :)

BBQ im assuming with your previous statement ARB is currently rating ALL their bumpers for airbag compliant issues correct? Meaning Deluxe, sahara etc.. I had never really thought about all or certain models etc..

Obviosly this is on my mind with a recent post.. Thanks

All ARB front bumpers (Combo, Sahara) are airbag certified. Their rear bumpers are rated for towing and have the proper equipment for that (safety chains, etc). Since getting an aftermarket bumper crash tested is so expensive, companies like Slee, and BIOR don't bother since it costs hundreds of thousands. Possibly millions, I'm not sure. IIRC they have to be crash tested after a certain number of years to update the certification. Again, I could be wrong about cost and frequency. However in the lighting industry bulbs and electrical systems must be certified multiple times throughout the decade to keep their certification.

I spoke with a friend, who's in the insurance business, right after I hung up with you. He told me to be very careful because insurance companies have become really strict on a lit of stuff and ait would not surprise him in the least if they denied me.

I believe all of ARB's bumpers are airbag compliant.

AFAIK, ARB bumpers are airbag compliant to Australian standards. The 100 series in Australia also has a tow capacity of 7700lbs vs 6500lbs in the US. Their roof capacity 440 lbs total or 110lbs per bar. The only figure I've seen for the US is 150lbs total for the OEM roof rack.

My point is, there is a difference in testing and standards. What is compliant in Australia is not necessarily compliant in the US. Of course, in regards to legal matters, any testing is better than no testing at all.

What is AFAIK short for?

^ isn't there a whole thread going on about bumpers right now?

From my experience, State Farm doesn't care what you have for a bumper.

screw air bag compliance... your airbag will still go off....it does not affect anything other than the timing of the air bag...it may go off a millisecond faster with aftermarket bumper than with one that has crumple zones.

like I said...I count on the smaller vehicle being my crumple zone! :)

I hate to add another bumper comment to this mans build thread so this will be my only comment.

I've had a few insurance claims in my days with vehicles, boats, houses, etc. I cannot imagine a vehicle claim being denied due to a different bumper being installed. Every redneck and their grandmother around this area has different bumpers on their jeeps, big F-150's, Dodges, Dually's, etc, etc, etc. People have been installing old style tube bumpers on jeeps, custom bumpers on low riders and other cars dating back to when car customizing became popular.

I'm sure there is someone who has had a bad claim go wrong at some point or got hit by lightning or got bit by a shark while swimming but stuff like this is so rare, few and far between I'll take my chances.

I specifically installed high clearance bumpers on my hundy because these trucks are big, heavy beasts that can use every inch of clearance you can muster out of these things... These vehicles are not ideal rock crawlers but they are awesome luxury, comfortable, expedition style rigs that are quite capable if outfitted properly and can take you to the trails at 80mph comfortably and keep up with many rigs that need to be trailered or drive like crap on the highway.

Good luck on the bumper decision.

Can your rear view camera see past the spare tire? I'm installing a Pioneer AVH-P4400BH and backup camera today. A swing out bumper is in my future and I don't want to drill into my rear gate if it's going to be useless in the future.

No. I have to move the camera or get a new one, but it can be done with the swing out.

Glad I asked. I got the head unit installed last night, held off on the camera. I'll wait to see how you resolve it. R&D...rip-off and duplicate.

I'm a few months overdo on posting pics of my steering being restored. Theres a local mobile leather repairman and I called him up and told him about how badly the leather was coming off my steering wheel. I went to the Ford dealership where he was and in one hour and $100 poorer, I had a brand new looking steering wheel. The steering wheel was looking VERY bad. Scratches all over and almost all of the leather on the top half was gone. Sorry, but I did not take any before pics.

^ very nice looking leather wheel redo! And the price was definitely right too! I need to get mine recovered one of these days...if we had a mobile guy that could do that for a hun I'd be all over it.

I had a custom made hitch cargo hauler made. the reason why is because I could never find one that fold up to clear the tire and the specs I wanted without weight 100 pounds. I would guess this aluminum carrier is in the neighborhood of 30l bs. The receiver shaft is also adjustable in the event I go with a 35" tire.
The fella who made it is very skilled and make aluminum duck boats. Y'all should check out his FB page.
