Hi to everyone. My friend's FJ40 has been sitting for a long time and it's gas tank is full of dirt and leaking to boot. Can't find a new one where I live so I was hoping to boil-out and repair the existing one. The problem is that the local shop says he can't cope with a tank that has baffles. My search of the forum yielded one post which said the FJ tank has baffles. Is this just true for some or true for all stock tanks? Thanks for your help!

I've read post here on Mud where NEW tanks are still available from Toyota and/or venders here on Mud---home run. Many get our rear tank as their one and only stand-alone tank. Have read many post where the non-Toyota interior replacement tanks are leakers/smelly?? Don't have first hand knowledge of this?? My guess is that anything is better than patching up an old rusty tank??

Plenty of options like Jim says;
Cool cruisers of texas (aka:CCOT) just dropped in a ccot replica tank to replace a leaky poly tank
Man-a-fre - like the long range under front seat model
Spector Off Road (aka:SOR)
Downey
MUD Vendors - search; fuel cell, gas tank

Too many options to be screwing around with a leaking time bomb. Be safe.

Don't waste your time screwing around with a rusty leaky tank. I'm speeking from experience here. If you fix one leak there are ten more ready to go at any time, it is a never ending battle and a pain in the ass.

I just bought a new OE tank from Toyota last week. It was less than $300, which is way less than the aftermarket tanks and you get the perfect OE Toyota fit and quality.

My local radiator shop hot tanked mine, brazed up the rust holes and sealed the inside and painted it for $50 and that was 12 years ago. Might cost a little more now.

i torch soldered sheet metal onto a f-150 tank that still had some gas in it once , that was probably 8 years ago, to my knowledge that tank it still holding fuel .

its a good idea to have it soaked in creosote at a rad shop though , the still fumed up gas tank welding is sorta interesting .

how do you get dirt in the gas tank ?

Had a foreman that tried welding up a gas tank once. Knocked him clean out in the snow when it blew. His dog woke him up a few hours later (when he got hungry?). Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

I was quoted $100-150 at the radiator shop to fix my leaky tank. $295 new from Toyota. New tank arrives next week. I'll decide which tank to have fixed 30 years from now.

If it's full of dirt clean it out. If the bottom is rusty clean it off and go get some fiberglass mat and resin and cover the entire bottom all the way up the sides. Then get a product to pour in the tank and seal any rust inside and follow the directions. Done. Cost maybe 75 dollars. I've glassed many a tank in my lifetime with no issues. I've done the "Just fix the little spot that is leaking and repainted the tank". It not a permanent solution.

The fiberglass is.

In fact glassing the place under the seat also works well. As it doesn't care if mud, dirt and water sit down there. The idea being you have to glass more than the flat spots it has to go up the sides and it's best to cover the underside of the pan with a nice rust preventative paint.

Phenomenal!!

What a wealth of information! I'm overwhelmed. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS How did the tank get so dirty? All I can say is that it was outside and I live on the prairies (North of Plentywood, Mt) and there's a lot of wind and blowing dust.
