I put this in the pick-ups and was looking for some more input, I was going to finish weld it saturday and I would like to know if it is going to work o.k. . I think all the movement comes from the hiem and the shackle not the axle. will this work or will it bind.

thanks Tim

I guess if the rod end has all the rotaion its ok but I would think the bushings should be 90deg of the axle

3yrs of 38.5 to 4D's and 180 to 1 mines worked great

I talked to bud at budbuilt and he said it does not matter witch way it is mounted as long as the shackle and hiem are strate up and down.
I had it mounted 90 to the axle but it had no room for shock movement. or it would have to hang below the axle about 3''.
I've only had the truck about a month and have alot of plans for it I'm just tring to get some little done in time for the fall crawl in oct. Thanks for your help.

Tim

In the pic looking up the bar from the rear, it looks like the misalignment capability of that heim joint is nearly maxed. You won't be able to flex it over much farther to passenger side. Tapage is right. If you flex it passenger side down, you'll put a side load on the shackle and something is going to give. Hopefully it'll just unscrew your rod end by a quarter turn.

If the shocks are in the way, consider revising your shock mounts. The crossbar that they're on is already starting to bow.

Mount your shocks on the back side of the axle. You can angle the shock mounts at both the top and bottom mts if the angle is not straight up and down between the mounts. That'll give you room for a better mounting of the traction bar.

edit: after looking at that pic again it looks like you might need to put one more crossmember in just for the top shock mount. You could position them more upright and further out to so they work better (would mean the crossmember would have to be higher somewhat)

run it.

loks good to me. Her is mine. I also didn't want it hanging below the axle.

I know this is an old thread but has anyone else built a bar like General Sherman did? How has it worked out for you? What angle was the bend made? I like the fact that there is nothing hanging below the axle to catch on rocks and debris.

It's a common design that works very well. As long as it's built strong enough.
