Hello, I’m curious for those of you with these tanks. What is your observed highway range as your vehicle is built?

12.5 gallon => The "safe" range I give myself is 300 miles but expect around 350 and could probably push it to 400 or so in an emergency.

At my crummy 11-12mpg Highway, I can stretch out to 500 miles pretty comfortably. That’s with the 24. I can get better mpg depending on the particular highway & conditions, but 500 is comfortably realistic.

I have 33s in 305/55/20s. No lift, other than what the tire lift gives me. And AHC that lowers ~1" at highway speeds.

I'm critical of weight and potential aero impacting mods, so have not gone off the deep end: LC rack with a 3rd cross bar added, ~150 lbs for the LRA tank/extra gas, ~100 lbs in heavier/larger AT tires.

My 3rd gas fill with the 12.5 aux tank. Just cleared 500 miles range from that fill-up, with the low gas light coming on. Finally have respectable fuel range!

Regarding difficult gas station pump question...

Just back from CA Costco where both sub and main were empty.

Piece of cake!
**Main filled without a single false stop...kept my hand off the handle til the normal shutoff at full.
**Sub tank (24) then filled, hands free without a single false stop.

Shot a time-lapse video if anyone needs reassurance. :)

Next week Slee will install a 40 gallon LRA tank in my 2016. My truck is pretty heavy so I expect with 60 gallons of fuel I will have an effective range of 675-700 miles. Next week I am also adding skid plates, a Trek Boxx Alpha, and extended diff breathers. :-)

Nice.

When your tank is in, it would be great to see photos of the 40 in place. Curious to see clearance compared to my 24 as it seems to me a larger tank would still tuck nicely.

yeah that is what I mean. I have no Led's on mine. So can't see it at night or the gauge. I was told they forgot to include the led light and Ward was sending it. But it's been several months. Guess I need to follow up myself with Ward. Easy thing for those guys to forget. Thanks for the info.

Please call me on this 209-636-0831. The "lights" are part of the integrated control module, so I am confused (not unommon).

Thanks!

My range is about 1000 with the 40 gallon tank. My rig is not as heavy as some of these guys. :))

I am sooooo jealous! :bounce2:

How are you hitting 1000? My math with my KO2s says I get 300 miles on 24 gallons and I carry no weight. Do you notice the weight when fully fueled?

When I had just KO2s and a lift, I could hit just shy of 19mpg on the highway. That means if I ran dry I could have conceivably hit over 400 on just my main tank (all highway).

If he’s mostly stock weight & resistance other than the tank, 64.6 gallons total could get him over 1000 miles on the highway pretty easily. Only needs 15.5mpg or so.

If highways are mild (with a lot of climbing) I’ve noticed that wind resistance hurts mpg even more than weight...so without bumpers, swingouts and external spares etc, i think 1000 is right in the ballpark for Illinois.

In my own monster rig, I’m happy if I manage 12-13mpg Highway and 500+ range on 48 gallons.

I get about 9mpg in city driving with my 2010 armored one...about 900lbs of extra weight. 4.7L engine. The 2017 gets about 15 with the 5.7l engine. Thankfully the 2010 has a 34 gallon tank stock.

MPG is very elastic based on use.

A recent Las Vegas all highway trip with a couple weekend bags, I average 15.5 MPG over 33 some gallons, equating to over 500 miles range.

This past weeking hauling my 7500lb trailer with a bunch of gear, over mountain ranges at a fast pace, with an off-roading trip mixed in, showed 8.4 MPG overall and ~290 miles range with 32 gallons. I think that's about as terrible of mileage as I've ever gotten.

In regards to filling. I'm not going to sugar coat and say there's no filling difference. Filling the main tank is indeed a bit more troublesome with the LRA filter neck. With some practice, it fills just fine. Instead of 12 o'clock, I clock the pump to 2 o'clock. And keep the fill handle lifted rather than sitting down. It seems to fill much more smoothly this way. Aux tanks fills great.

8.4 MPG... man I'm envious. Just re-filled yesterday and we got 6.7MPG (unadjusted for tire size). Of course that's 100% city stop and go in winter, all cold starts (temps hovering around zero for several days last week), and rarely up to operating temp unless it's idling in the driveway first.

Sheez, Goeff. Were you towing at the time? Is that just daily commuting?

Wow. Where's the dislike button. That MPG''s gotta hurt.

Nope just day to day driving

Wow. Something seems very odd there if you really got only 6.7mpg...even in city stop-and-go.

I literally get better than that MPG while wheeling in 4Lo on long (like all day), slow, tricky trails in Moab including a lot of idling waiting for other trucks in the line, or spotting. And that’s with my 35’s, massive weight...and without correcting for tire ratio.

My heavy-duty wheeling mpg tends to be 8+...maybe 7.5 on a slow-ish stretch like on the recent Mojave trail recently...but still a full mile better than that.

On the other hand, it’s always been curious to me how my crappy mpg stays about the same whether I’m cruising at 75 or on a slower backroad highway at 45 or 50. This is partly why I feel like wind resistance plays a huge part in dropping MPG overall compared with stock aerodynamics. I dunno. Still seems you are seeing extraordinarily bad numbers.

So I'm taking this as you're doing very short drives, all stop and go, in very cold weather?

That's just about the worse case.
1) short drives - engine is operating largely under cold start fuel enrichment
2) stop and go - takes a lot of energy to accelerate a heavy rig
3) cold weather - cold weather fueling enrichment as cold air is more dense

Then add in the heavy build, 34" tires without gears, and loss of aero...

Wonder what the MPG would be if you tossed on the travel trailer.
