Hi All!

I am a long time member of this site and recently acquired a 2003 GX470 as my new wheelin' machine. Owned Landcruisers for years, but wanted a v8 without the weight of the 100 series. Saw the article in Toyota 4wd Owner magazine on The rig built by Dan Kunz and decided I needed to have one. The build so far has been basic - fluids, front brake pads replaced, removed the running boards and added Goodyear Duratrac 255/75-17 tires. Stock suspension at this point.

Would like to purchase an Aussie locker. Has anyone used this locker in their 120 series rig? I used one in my 40 series; however, there were no electronics to consider, just good ol' steel and a right pedal.

Future mods include sliders, 2" lift, and hopefully a winch (interesting thread on the winch mount. Anxious to see the results).

Thanks!

if your gonna use a locker in one of these use a real locker, either go with ARB or a toyota Elocker retrofit, or no locker at all. you will break things and the driveability will be crap. i have had so many people come back to me after their aussie locker was installed and asked WTH why am i braking axles or why dose it drive like crap... and i tell them A; i told you so, and B; because you put a aussie locker in a street rig.

Thanks for the responses. Be interested to read and hear how the ARB works. For my level of exploration, rear locker us all I need.

Has anyone completed a Toyota E-Locker retrofit on the GX? Thanks!

Not to my knowledge but its the same rear axle as the 4runners from 96-09 and possibly further.

ARBs will work no different than in any other vehicle.

@SouthernSS just acquired one to install on his gx ... easier said than done though I think you have to swap the entire axle housing ...
No you do not, you can modify the existing housing by nothing out for the actuator, and moving one stud. You can swap 3rd members between all Toyota 8" axles.

I'll be doing it soon and I'll let you know how it goes. Gonna re gear everything to 4.56's as well. One of our club members has one laying around and offered it to me, so I jumped on it.

My father in-law has one in his shop and I'm hoping he has no plans for it... I don't know what ratio it is, I'm hoping 4.10 or 4.30.

If you are not hardcore wheeling I wouldn't even bother with a locker. I haven't worried about it in 5 years of wheeling my GX and I have hit some hard trails. Did poison spider with just ATRAC.

If you are gonna do a locker do it right the first time around and go selectable. A luchbox locker with all the traction contrs and stability control would be a recipe for disaster if you ask me. The axles are strong enough for a lunchbox that's not an issue. To me this idea is like buying a yacht and giving it a glitter paint job by hand/rattle caned like a bass boat... Or using a scrap wood and used materials to build a mansion... Why take and nice fairly sophisticated vehicle and put such a crude part in it the makes it drive like crap.

delectable lockers sound delicious!

selectable all the way, but I keep saying it...I have wheeled harder than most will and I haven't needed one at all!

Every so often my mind wonders about having a rear locker, but then I do a search and keep finding Dan's comments on not needed unless you do hard core rock crawling...which I don't do

I used my lockers (front and rear) on the Rubicon. I have used my rear in moab and occasionally on harder optional lines elsewhere. Most of the stuff a GX will see you can ATRAC through.

Always appreciate your insights. I almost did buy a GX over another 80 because of the lack of lockers. It seems like if you are going to drive hard a rear axle swap to a 9.5” and elocker is the way to go.

Honestly: If you aren't doing some serious wheeling/rock crawling: Gold Bar Rim, Rubicon, Katemcy, etc. The GX is absolutely fine with ATRAC and a rear locker. The 8" is not something I like, at all. Swapping to an 8.2 axle with an elocker, harrop, or ARB is all you need unless you want to get into some serious wheeling. Expo and weekend warrior stuff and the 8.2 will pretty much get you there. Passed that (or if you get REALLY heavy), 9.5" is an amazing upgrade.

To be deep enough where the GX would need to be locked, I'd think the truck would have to be hardened/armored in a number of areas to handle the terrain in addition to locked diffs. Slippery slope I guess...

contact "Tools R Us" here on MUD, he just installed a Toyota locker in a GX (not mine)
