so i had been running my 45 troopie just fine, cruising on the highways at around a steady 80 degrees celcius...but i finally just got around to putting my a/c in...and now my temp gauge is saying more like 95 degrees...and holding steady...

however, this week the weather outside is more like 45 degrees...

and the a/c condenser is mounted right in front of the radiator...

and im not using an electric fan...only the engine fan...

could one or two or three of these factors be made to blame for the increase?

i would have of course just turned off the a/c to check for any differences - only the wife was in the car at the time it was noticed...and she doesnt like me 'fiddling' with things while she is present...go figure...and now its in the shop for some other unrelated bits...

im just thinking that the combination of the hot condenser in front of the trying-to-cool radiator, coupled with it being silly hot outside, coupled again with the extra strain on the engine via the compressor...could have something to do with this - i will of course take a ride without the a/c at my earliest convenience - just looking to get any thoughts of others with a similar issue...

thanks as always,

We have the same problems here, Is your idle up working? Have you flushed your rad. lately? MIke

In new installations, I've rarely noticed the a/c making much of a difference at all, either in power, or in running temp. Chances are, your radiator is the culprit, needs rodding out or replacement. It wouldn't be the drag of the compressor (not noticeable really against the torque available) The electric fan and idle up would only be effective in idling in traffic type situations. You should also check your fan clutch, if so equipped. I assume your condensor is not clogged, since running temp is normal without the a/c on.

i actually didnt adjust my idle at all...as it made only a tiny dip in the revs...lots of torque and all...the rad core is a new four core - as is every other element of the cooling apparatus...so thats whats become curious to me...interesting to see others have had similar findings...but to such a degree?

hmmm....

it'll be two days till i get to see whether or not the same problem persists without the a/c on...i should mention that i do not have in place the thermostat...but will be putting it in in the near future...the fan is also functioning as per usual...as well as the shroud...hosing...water pump...etc etc etc etc.....

with it being 113F outside, you should be quite happy your engine temp only went from 176F to 203F.

With a good cap I would not becoming concerned until the engine temp gets to ~230F (110C)
