Anyone running a 1Up Rak Attach on their 200 series? (1 Viewer)

I'm still trying to sort out the best way to carry high-end bikes over rough terrain on the back of my LC200 with ARB rear bumper swing outs. I have the super nice 1UP heavy duty bike carrier already so trying to make that work. By adding a roughly 18 inch hitch extension, I can get both the ARB swingouts open, but it leaves very little room to actually get at the stuff in the back of the truck. Anyone try the Recon Rack? I'm thinking with a vertical rack I might have more space to access the back of the truck

I have the Recon 5 bike and love it but have only used it on my stock rear bumper so far. The rack itself can certainly handle rough terrain. @Moby mentioned he had a modified one too (which I’d like to see pictures of!) so maybe he could chime in. The hitch extension would certainly create some more leverage but I bet you’d be fine. If you need me to take any additional measurements, I’m happy to.

I recently received the 1up hitch rack, and it is very well made. Installed the rack in the 2, 3, and 4 bike configurations to check everything for proper fitment. I didn't take a picture, but in the 2 bike setup empty, the tailgate slightly contacts the rack. Now if bikes were in the tray's, you would have to use the tilt feature to gain access to the back of the truck. I'm unsure the tilt will be adequate in the 3 or 4 bike to clear the hatch alone.

Still learning the rack, but I think I'll be missing the swing away feature of the Yakima hitch mount it replaces. That said, I'm wary of the added stress any attachment that adds distance to clear the tail gate. Just thinking out loud.

I'll grab a pic tomorrow. Basically I just took some square box that is hitch size and welded some brackets to the top of it. Then made a plate with matching brackets that I bolted to the upright (3 or 4 different holes to change the leverage ratio). Between the 2 are pneumatic struts, same as for the upper portion of a tailgate. With 4 bikes on it (reasonable weight, my racing bikes - road, gravel and XC/marathon MTB, and my son and wife's MTBs) I can lower and raise it one handed. With 2-4 bikes on it it will stay down or up unless you assist it with a little pressure in the direction you want to go. With one bike it won't stay down, but the struts are attached with a ball lock quick release on one end so I can just pop one end of them off. But if I know I will only have one bike I take my One-Up.

I did this because I didn't want to take all the bikes off to let my Golden out of the back during road trips. Works great. It's maybe 4 or 5 years old now? I don't have the newer Recon style with the self latching pin (which is slick!) but I did change out the upright pin to a ball lock quick release. I didn't paint it though so it is ruuuusty now :hillbilly:

@MTKID here you go. When the rack is lowered the struts compress and allow one hand lowering fully loaded. I still have to apply some upward pressure to keep it from just falling, but that allows it to stay down. And then just a little more upward pressure to raise it. Just enough to be an assit.

Nicely done 👌🏼 I love it. Mine has the newer pivot and my family’s bikes include smaller bikes that don’t weight quite as much but that is slick 😉

That new pivot is super slick, I'm jealous.

You are likely sliding the rack too far in the receiver. You should be able to open the tailgate without it contacting the rack. Its close but there is no contact.

I had a 1up 2 bike for years. Then 4 years ago when both my kids were on adult mountain bikes added 2 more trays. That’s when for me the 1up really started to suck, the rack got huge and heavy. From there I sold both +1 trays and was offered the opportunity to trade the base 2 tray for a a kuat 4. Then went to a north shore-4 and haven’t looked back since. It’s less then half the weight of the 1up, holds the bikes closer to the truck, dosn’t block the brake lights, and is very easy to store off the truck. I’ve got probably 30k miles of hauling 4 enduro/trail bikes on the north shore now (almost 10k miles this past summer) with no issues at all. For more then 2 bikes can’t beat the functionality of the vertical rack.

Agree, the 1up rack is really only good for 2 bikes after that you got a huge backend.

I was running the North Shore 6 on my Suburban and it worked great thought I ended up selling it when I purchased the Land Cruiser.

For me the ideal situation is a kuat pivot V2 with a 1 or 2 1up rack. The pivot V2 opens up the tailgate area nicely when accessing the back. If I decide to pack more bikes they'll go on the roof.

A really nice vertical rack is the velocirax. I think its the best one out there now!

I'm still waiting for my kuat pivot V2 to be delivered, it's been back ordered 2 months now. I need to check if it hits the tailgate when dropped and if I can mod anything to fix the issue.

I have the north shore rack 4 and it’s sweet! Carry 4 bikes with lots of off-roading it’s solid. When rallying off road I do add an extra strap around the head tube, not sure it’s necessary. Bonus it’s light enough for my wife to borrow for her toyota.

One other thing to consider is what kind of bikes you'll be carrying. Mine is complicated by needing to carry road, gravel and MTB marathon race bikes as well as MTB trail, kids and a fat bike.

I've only put my marathon MTB and Gravel in my 1up, as it tends to be the rack I take to races, and it does great with these. There are separate uprights for fat bikes but I haven't tried them.

I've put every sort of bike except the fat bike in my Recon. Albeit in the older style baskets. Recon has a kids bike wheel size basket (and a fat bike basket, which I haven't used). I don't know if the new style basket handles all tire sizes or if kids/fat bike size are still required. Anyway all of these that I've tried work great with one exception - road bike tires do not like having their sidewalls rubbing on the rails of the basket. Running a layer of foam around the top of the basket was a cheap and easy fix.

I use a Lolo Rack .
It works great for swing outs.

As someone else mentioned, the Rocky Mounts Backstage fits perfectly and doesn't interfere with the tailgate at all. Instead of swinging all the way out, you can also tilt it back like other racks for quick access and the tailgate also clears in that position.

I've had this rack on 5 different vehicles in about the same amount of time and it has held up shockingly well. I'm impressed.

As mentioned earlier, the RakAttack top bolt will hit the tailgate when tailgate is dropped. That’s no good. I sold the RakAttach and bought the Wilco Off-road swing out and couldn’t be happier. It raises the rack & bikes a little higher too. A little bearing grease helps the swing out seat and the locking pin slide in and out very easy. Sorry this is the best picture I have of it in action. 100% worth it.

Though the tailgrate still hits the hitchswing receiver just above the license plate

When the swing out is closed it hits any brand as far as I know. When it‘s open, it clears fine with the Wilco.
