I already have the 4.88s but I will have to re-gear the front end with the solid axle. The questions is, since I have to buy one set of gears, should I just go 5.29s for 35 inch tires? I am just wondering if anyone is running 4.88s with 35 or larger tires. I do have a healthy 22re that has 15,000 miles so it does run well.

your kinda stuck buying new gears.. You can always drive the truck around in 2wd with the 4:88's and 35's for a bit to see if you like it..

My roomates truck is a healthy 22re with 100k and 5:29's with 36" tires runs great around town! feels the same as it did with the stock gears and 31's

I second the idea, swap the axle but leave the shafts and diff out for now. Slap a set of 35's on, drive it for awhile in 2WD, see what you think.

I have 4.88's in now, but my most common street tire is 33x10.50 BFG ATs. It's a perfect match for the 22RE, speedo and odo is dead on. I often run my 35" MTs in the summer to spread out the wear on both sets of tires, and I don't think it's bad at all. I wouldn't want to make a long trip in that setup, but it has more to do with the crappy lumpy ride of the 35's than the gearing.

Cool, I will drive around in 2wd to see how I like it. I have some 32s with 4.88s and the speedo is showing that I am going faster than I really am. I think it's about 5mph off. If I swapped them, would they be worth anything? I have never looked into buying used gears.

I don't think 4.88s have enough for a tire larger than 35"..I know that isn't the issue here..just chimin in and think they would work great on 35s

I've found 5.29s and 37s to be a "bit" off but pretty driveable around town with a strong motor.

Gear ratios to tire size (Keeping a stock ratio)

4.10-28"
4.30-29.36"
4.56-31.14"
4.88-33.32"
5.29-36.12"
5.71-38.99"

That is for a manual transmission that got 4.10s with 28" tires stock. This does not account for the added weight of the tires..... but your speedo will be right, if you can find 36.12" tires....... :D also assuming that 28" tires are 28"...... There's a lot of room for error.

And another thing! :D When you change tire size your speedo is not off by 5 or 10 MPH, it's off by a ratio. If you put 31s on a truck with 4.10s you are now going aprox... 10% faster than stock, so when the speedo says 20 you are going 22, when it says 60 you are going 66 etc.

4.88 will be more than fine with 35's.
I use to run 33's with my stock 4.10 gears and I had no trouble at all.

gearing.

though getting back to stock gearing is idea when lifting and getting bigger tires. also take into account that you have more wind resistance. i am running 34'' tires and 529 gears. in town first gear in pretty short but the highway driving is still doable. allthough on the interstate the hamsters are spinning quite fast they still handle it.

all that babble meaning....go with 529s and be done with buying gears for the duration on this vehicle. :D

I will try out the 4.88s in 2wd to see how it works. If not I will try to sell the 4.88s. Anyone interested in a front ifs third with a detroit?

I have the 3slow with 4.88 on 36" tsl/sx's.
Get the 5.29 and forget it.
I bought it this way and can't wait to get 5.29's.

dont even bother dude..just go with the 5.29s....listen to what the other posters are saying to you :)

Are used gears even worth looking at? I am only thinking of putting used up front if I go 5.29s to try and save some cash. The rear third already has new bearings so I am not too worried about rebuilding it again. I wish the dude that did the gears would have just put in 5.29s...

I'm running;

4.88s with a 22RE and 35s

5.29s with a 22R and 36s

4.88s with a 350 and 36s

I have run;

5.29s with a 22R and 38s

5.29s with a 22R and 34s

4.10s with a 22RE and 33s

4.10s and a 22RE and 35s

4.10s and a 350 with 35s

4.10s with a 350 and 36s

4.10s with a 350 and 38s

All of these combos were used for a good while. On the road and on the trail.

IMHO 5.29s are too tall for 33s and smaller if the rig is going to be used on the road much at all. 36s are just about perfect with this gearing in a 5 speed/22R equipped mini. 38s are a little tall for this motor/gear combo.

With the 22RE and 4.88s, 35 inch tires are okay. But just that. Leaves you wishing for a little more oomph. 5.29s are a little steep for 35s. But just a little.

Mark...

I ran 4.88's on my 22RE Runner w/ 37 MTR's, a friend had the exact same truck, weight etc and was running 5.29's. He did have more power in the first few gears, but on long Sierra hill climbs he'd be in 4th (3rd was too low) and I'd be in 3rd and smoke him up the hills. I liked the 4.88/37 combo and now run that on my 85 Xtra cab....plus the 4.88's are a little stronger. Just one man's opinion:)

Damn, I'm Mr. slow, I'm running my 35's on 4.30's, sucks going up those big hills, at times I've had to drop down to 2nd to make it over the top. Even the truckers with a full load are cursing me.

nothing wrong with used gears....i have seen some sets go into multiple trucks.....its all about the set up...make sure you know who set them up and that they are competent gear installer

I am sure that these were set up right. Do you think that anyone would want the ifs locker and gears? I can see someone wanting the rear gears but I'm not sure about being able to sell the fronts. I guess it isn't a big deal, but anything to go towards the sas would be nice.
