Anybody build 100 series front bumper? (1 Viewer)

I think building bumpers for IFS rigs really involves 90% design time and 10% fabrication time. We can't just glob a bunch of metal on a coilover suspension. Additionally, the LX deserves elegance, not throw on watcha got in the back yard :flipoff2: Remember that the air bags need a proper impact event to deploy, which is another deal to keep in mind.

I haven't really bought any steel for my own projects in about 10 years. I save anything I find usuable from jobs I do for other people.

Im going to have to build something fairly light if I plan on adding a winch later. I want it to look good, but I dont think "elegance" is what I'm going for, haha. I already have the "pink panties" no reason to add lace.

Now I'm having a hell of a time finding the correct bolts for the threaded holes in the frame I was planning on using for mounting. Pretty sure they are m14-1.5, but have no way to measure them. Found a piece to an old puller of some sort that has the same threads, but cant find any bolts today. Now I have to go to town this week to buy steel and bolts. I have piles of junk around here and nothing I need for this project.

Damn road blocks!

If you want lightweight, check out what Ben Calhoun makes, Dissent Offroad. I've seen his stuff in person and it is top notch and very innovative.

I really like those bumpers. I have been looking at bumper pictures all weekend and have got a few ideas.

I may have steel odds and ends for you- not sure how far away "Central New Mexico" is but I am in Alb. I agree with Ali still about baking in the winch plate, no sense in getting it built and discovering nothing will fit your design! I am HAPPY to donate some material to insure the project is a success especially in that regard. You should also be able to find mount templates/dimensions for the specific winch you want from the manufacturer.
As a matter of academics, I also wonder aloud how folded 16ga would hold up if you put in some 16g interior ribs then tacked on a couple of plates of 1/8" in the right spots.

Sell a rifle??!! NEVER!

Here are a couple images of my projects.... for grins..

I wonder if any of the 100 bumper vendors sell a kit that you can weld up at home? This saves a ton of design and cutting time. They do this for the 80 and 4runner crowd so might be worth looking around.

Yeah, Central NM is pretty vague. I'm in the mountains South of Edgewood. The closest place to me with an actual name would be Yrisarri.

Thanks for the offer. I have everything I need except the 1/8 inch steel. Might pick that up this afternoon.

Cool projects. Real nice bends.

I found one company that does sell a kit, but I'm a cheapskate and If I'm going to build it I'd rather do it all. Designing anything makes my head hurt, but building it is where the fun is.

I agree. CAD design is easy to do, that is Cardboard Aided Design :flipoff2:

That's really funny because thats how I've been doing it. Got in trouble Saturday for "ruining" the wife's good scissors. I'll just take them to the next breakfast and see what the guy in the parking lot can do with them.

Cool, I'll bring my scissors for a PLMOD (parking lot modification) of the bumper design 🤣

Also lets you fiddle with it and modify much more easily!

Strong work!
Now, if it suits you, have an adult beverage and stare at it for a bit. Listen to your instincts!

How about a pic from the side?

Add some fog lights, rock lights, tow points, a winch and you're good to go!

Make sure you leave enough gap between the bumper and the body for flex and your next tree adjustment. I went a little tight and it scraped the body on a hard flex...

Yeah, I'm still not sure how I am going to do the lights. The turn signal lights for the LX are on the bumper and I want to keep it that way. Not sure what lights I am going to use yet. Maybe some 3/4 inch bullet leds like the Dissent bumper.

I am also thinking of tapering it a little more on the "wings"
