Why can't this stuff ever be close to me?

curious cuz I don't recall seeing this before: what are these recesses behind the jaws for? That for screws access from the back? Does not look like the typical bullet. Did a google search and only saw one or two like that out of many. These uncommon?

That's a Wilton C3 6" combo vise! probably the best one they made. Everyone loves the style with the jaws that bolt on from the back. only the six inch model had those cut outs you're referring to. I wouldn't say uncommon, but they only did it for a certain frame of time. I don't know how long. If I remember right it was more than ten years(?) Consider yourself lucky if you can find one listed under $1000 in my area. they do come up cheap sometimes though. I just missed this one a week ago.

I saw that they still make new ones with the rear cutouts, as in the 600N model. But did not see them with the pipe jaws.

Correct. This is about a two year old C3 that I got new for my shop. It doesn’t have the bolt from the back jaws. The 800s I got last year does have them. The new C3 is still great but I like the jaws without the bolt holes in the face better.

Nice find! What model is it? There are a couple of Cole vises just like that (No.11) on nearby Craigslists, one is $150 and another is $325. They look like an interesting take on the blacksmith post vise.

how do you attach that thing to a bench?

It's the number 11. There's been one that's got the Worth name branding on my local CL for $125 for a long time. There are a couple good videos on YouTube on how they work. You can also use it as a pipe wrench if you remove it from the base.

ah, interesting. Thanks.

Amazing finds @Mr Wonderful. I believe that Sampson is a Rock Island but that Stanley is the real star.

Ya i had no idea what it was. The replaceable jaws clued me in that it might be something good. The guys in GJ had to tell me where to clean to look for the stamp. On member said these style jaws are very rare. They don’t appear in any of the catalogs. They discontinued the sweetheart line during WWII. You might also recognize the cabinet I bought too…..

What a score! I really miss my military cabinet (mine was Korea vintage). I threw it in as a sweetner for the Prentiss #22 sale. They looked great together.

My guess on color is standard army green (olive drab?). Top was painted same I believe.

I picked up this Reed 104-1/2 this weekend. It’s in very nice condition. Not that I’m complaining, I just can’t seem to find an “R” series for the life of me! This one is dated October 1928.

Another nice find. Looks like it started its life at Boeing.
