@Aloha Jen may know someone
is a 5 speed needed on the island??
having someone do the work, my WAG would be close to $10,000 on the island, maybe more

Its your rig and money but 0 to 4000' on 600 square miles. I'm at 4000' in a 2000 square mile county and I get by with the 3 speed. I do have a 4 speed sitting on the porch.

I'd bet there are some build threads for a 5 speed. Might have time and prices but for sure all the mods need to make it fit and work

I lived on Oahu for a while. I don't think you'll get much use out of 5th gear. IMHO the 4 speed is perfect for the island. I don't know any shops there but like everything else on Oahu, it will be expensive. You might be better off to find someone willing to help you do it yourself.

I’m not use the FJ40 for 4 wheeling, mostly I want to drive around but on a freeway around 60mph it like screaming for help. That the reason I want a 5 speed.

I’m sure there are plenty of mechanics/shops willing to do the swap, but none that I would trust to do it right. Plus, the expense having a shop for that job would be absurdly high.

I have a 5 speed in my ‘85 hj60 and a 4 speed in my ‘75 fj40. I drive both on the freeway, and the 5 speed is way more comfortable to drive 60-70 mph. Oahu is a small island (depending on your perspective) but there are long stretches of freeway that one can travel 60-80mph during non traffic hours. I’d say go for it if you have the time/money, but will be difficult to find someone to do it right out here IMO.
