Antennae replacement options?

Yep, that works if it's what you want. You would purchase the FJ62 antenna and also an antenna switch for the FJ60 (assuming you have an FJ60)...

FJ62 power antenna: 86300-90A25 MSRP: $188.53
FJ60 switch: 84760-90A00 MSRP: $86.40

New stuff is not cheap, but it's OEM.

That's what I did and used is MUCH cheaper than new. The FJ62 antenna was $20 or so at the wreckers and the FJ60 switch was harder to find (got it at cruiserparts.net for $20). The switch allows you to raise or lower the antenna to suit your needs. I use the CD way more than the radio (the radio is used primarily for news or traffic when I'm travelling and that's it).

The harness should already be there. It was in my '82 BJ60 and they were never an option as far as i know.

Anywhere wires are spliced, it creates the potential for a problem. It's been said that 90% of electrical problems occur at connections. So, using that logic, eliminating a connection should cut down the risk of a problem by 90%.

I absolutely agree about connections being a source of problems. But, assuming the 90% premise is valid, you would have to eliminate ALL of your connections for a 90% reduction in problems. But still totally worth it to reduce problems by any amount.

Either that, or eliminate 2 connections and see a 99% reduction in problems . . .

(Okay, I'm being nitpicky - I'll save you the trouble and flip off myself :flipoff2:)

Rubber ducky, haven't hit it with a canoe since I put it on..never think about it cause it works fine...If I had one that telescoped it would be a short period of time before I "forgot" and bent the hell out of it....That's just me though...

In a previous life I was a car stereo installer and I would avoid the flexible rubber antennas. reception sucks esepcially if you like AM talk radio.

Tsk, whateva! :flipoff2:
Just kidding! Math was never my strong point. But, we can all agree that the fewer connections or splices, the better.

Pulling the old cable and running the new is not that bad. I was able to reach up and unplug the old one from my radio. (You should be able to see it from the pass side floor.) Pull it thru the firewall. Then run the new one back thru firewall and up to radio. Shouldn't have to remove radio.

my .02

Oh, that would be good! I just bought that new Napa antenna and have been putting off installing it just because I thought I'd have to pull the radio. Will have to try reaching it from the passenger side floor.

:bounce:

Yep. Once you look up there you'll see it's pretty accessible. It literally takes like 10mins start to finish.

Opinions: Mine electric goes down but not up, switch problem?

All the switch does is reverse polarity to the motor. It's only hot when the switch is pushed. You could take out the switch and try reversing it with jumpers. Do you have a wiring diagram?

Just a follow up to this thread.
I installed my $8.99 Napa antenna last weekend!

Sometimes the least inexpensive upgrades provide the most pleasure - I really like the way it looks.
Was a real PITA to get the old one off - non OEM, but was pretty rusty. Ended up using a hacksaw to get it off!
Also, I had a heck of a time getting my hands up behind the stereo. Ultimately was able to do it, but extremely awkward position & fairly frustrating.

Anyone know what to do with the ground wire that was running off of the old one? I could reattach to the new, but if it doesn't have any impact on reception, I'd prefer to just leave it off?

on my way

i guess i'mheaded to napa this afternoon,to order my antennae.sure that thing looks sweet.:)

So... resurecting a really old thread here.... but does anyone have a part# or a source for the rubber duckie antennas?? I can't seem to locate anything. Everything I find on fleabay is for VHF/UHF....

Not urgent, but I'm really not liking my current wobbly crooked antenna, and would prefer a duckie over the super long lightning pole.

I am not sure what a rubber duckie is, but why not putting a firestick in the stock location? Then you can get a splitter for AM/FM as well as CB then you'd be golden.

I'm not running a CB, so I don't want a firestick. I have a 5/8 Mag mount for my Icom VHF and it works great. I just hate my current wobbly am/fm.

Rubber duckie is a short rubber flexible antenna, usually about 1/2 the height of a steel whip antenna. (there are some posted earlier in this thread)

I heard these really didn't work too well, but I'm no expert.

NAPA online - BK 7304857 doesn't appear to be a correct part # any longer... :(

Was hoping to replace my busted one on the 87. 84 is getting the power antenna and switch - i've seen too many nice trucks where some jackhole bent the antenna...

87 has a high tech coat hanger stuffed into the broken end - super great reception...
