Ok, I got a BJ70 with 13B-T. I have a second water temp gauge that is pretty accurate. Now, when it's like below -25C and I am idling the engine at around 1100rpm, I show a water temp of about 130F. Then when I start driving, the temp goes down. Why? Also, I have the radiator totally blocked off, the grill covered, and beneathe the engine covered from just behind the radiator to the transfer case mount. I know that the bottom engine cover does not prevent any cold from getting into the engine area, but it should help to reduce any wind chill and alot of cold air to come up around the engine while driving. What would be symptoms of the thermostat stuck open and closed?

sounds like you need a new thermostat , buy a new OEM part . You should also have poor output from your heater if this is the case .

Stuck open would be my guess. Don't quote me on this...but I think when I bought a thermostat from Toyota recently, they gave me a choice of a regular one or one with a higher temp rating.

I find it strange that your is stuck open as I believe Sheldon replaced the thermostate recently when he put in a new water pump on your engine. ?

I'll check it out tomorrow, Wayne...maybe I'm mixing it up with another place...

Wayne: Looked it up at NAPA online for now. According to their online catalogue, they have two thermostat choices listed for the 3B...a standard 180 degree model and a 192 degree model. Their website is www.napaonline.com, and the part number is BA 1430678 for the 192 degree model. Maybe I had priced out an aftermarket one before buying the Toyota OEM, but I'll call JP tomorrow and confirm/deny the existence of an OEM 192 degree thermostat. Cheers.

for whatever thermostat you get you might try boiling it up before putting it in. I got a ginuwine toyota one from the local parts place, (they are cheaper than the aftermarket ones anyway) and it stuck closed on the first run, nearly cooked my engine (again). Stuck the old one back in and its still going great guns.

Wayne: Just checked with Gord at JP Toyota, and he says what you said...only one available is the 88*C model, last five digits of the part number is 03103. I must have talked to an aftermarket parts person before buying one and he gave me a choice and I'm mixing it up in my head.

Anyway, Stephan...I guess I do have the 88*C thermostat in my 13BT right now as that's the only model available here from Toyota. My temps still run fairly cool in our mild (compared to yours or Wayne's) weather...on the freeway, when it's about -2 to -8*C outside, the temp needle sits about a third of the way up the gauge and stays there.

Yes and Yes. Both new OEM, Tstat #90916-03103 88 degree Celcius
Also the Rad was pretty much new OEM too (not RB)

I think it is cooling down when you start driving because A/ the coolant is cycling through the rad faster, the fan is spinning faster with the revs and air is going to get pulled through the Rad no matter what you put in front of it.
