I found a cruiser that has been converted to the H model diesel. I know a while back that Charles (cruiserguy) told me that the H is not as good as the 3B diesel for longevity and it is not sleeved like the 3b.

What is a very rusty 1976 FJ40 worth with a H that smokes at start up and uses a quart between changes?

He says $5000. I think he is smoking wacky tobacky?

Ideas.

I know the canadian guys would be able to ballpark it's value better than me as the body is a rusty as I have seen them up North.

Background -My idea was to use the engine tranny etc (if good) in my 1979 FJ40 body for a keeper. The body on my 1979 is clean but has a blown motor.

thanks

Depends on what you mean by "smokes on start up".
If it goes on for a few minutes and obliterates the neighbours from view I would say its worth nothing or about the same as the rusty body:D

if the body is shot, it is not worth 5k.

go to G&Scruiser parts. Buy a good JDm engine for your conversion. Get a 1hz or 13b-t. 2h engines are loved by many, so to say they are inferior is wrong. But not worth 5k on a rusty body. If they body was good and you wanted it for a truck not a parts donor I would say it is worth it.

but with soo many good engines availble from G&S I say no.......

incase you did not know http://www.gscruiserparts.com/index.html

at one time a truck like this would be worth a pretty penny but since g&s has been bringing in the more exotic engines and us importers have been bringing in the new cruises to Canada, the old 2H has lost plenty of it's value coupled that with a rusted out truck and the value is no where near what it used to be.
maybe $3500 CND...
a 13BT is a good swap (Bruce has done a great job on one)
the 12HT would be a decent swap since you could stilluse the same tranny
1HZ is my favorite or the 1PZ could be a good choice.
cheers

You have pics .. ?

H engine is a old 2H, you can buy a 2H head and use this with your old H block. Acnycase it's dependt of the overall condition.

Aaron, you need to get a compression test and a leak down test and see what they tell you. If the diesel engine needs a rebuild it's NOT worth it.
The H problems is cracking rings and if you want to turbo it doesn't have piston skirt cooling. My preference is the 3B/13B-T but the H/2H/12H-T are still fine engines.
You may also be able to find JDM engines at engine importers as well. My '67 FJ45LV will be getting an early '90's 3B (not my first choice but they don't bring in the 13B-T or anything older than '90). My cost on the 3B with all engine mounted accessories is approx. $2000 and it includes a Dyna tranny. Not sure if it'll be 12v or 24v but I'll work with whatever I get.

Sorry no pics yet. I put a note on it about a year ago. I didn't think then to take photos and this guy doesn't have a computer. It needs a new tub IMO.

so now that I see what newer toyota's diesel conversions would cost I think that makes my decision easy. I am not far from BC which also makes the decision easy.

I looked into the 3B (used option with accessories)maybe a year and a half ago and recieved quotes of $5k USD from someone in Canada. Sounds like the prices have come down from that point? Maybe there are more folks selling used toyota diesel engines and prices have come down alot?

That was why I thought this might be decent idea. But with Charles mentioning prices like that this rusty converted wanna be BJ40 is worth maybe $2500 USD or less.

Thanks guys for making this so clear. I didn't mean to stir the pot on the H/2H vs B/3B question.

Although she sure is a gutless wonder, I have alot of faith in my 270 000km 3B, I am really interested to see how long she will really go, sometime in the next few years I may take the head off and have my friends dad set the valves and take a look at everything. Well see, I think she has a little tick in her when shes cold, I tell myslef its the injector pump but with my head in the engine bay it sounds more like a tick, once she warms up it goes away and sounds amazing, IMO. I have a nice glass pack muffler from TSC for a Massy ferguson tractor, I really like the way it sounds and was like 30 bucks. Just remember the more you spend the better your truck will be, and although everythings a bit of a money pit, at least not everyone drives these trucks and there built like a brick s*** house!

Eric,
the head does not come off to set the valves.

it does to "seat the valves"

all that comes off is the valve cover, simple 10 min job eh!

you just line up the crank marks as per the FSM then turn the crank 180 and measure the rest of the valves.

you need feeler gages and just adjust. do it while the engine is hot hot hot.

pay attention to the rockers for pounded wear, if they are cratered then you have to machine them or replace. I am told they are not huge dollars to buy.

so no need to wait a couple years. this is someting you should do at least once a year.
