The HJ45 Troopy that I have here in Costa Rica just doesn't have the grunt to effectively climb the mountainous roads where we live. It is embarrassing to head up a train of 20 cars as I slowly crawl my way up the winding roads in 1st gear. Also, a lot of parts for the H motor are no longer available. Therefore I'm considering an engine swap.

Due to the limited tools that I have here, I need a replacement engine that does not require a lot of fabricating to install. From my reading, the 12HT appears to fit the bill, however, they are nonexistent here in Costa Rica. My next choice would be a 1HD-T or 1HD-FT. Here are my concerns:

Will the bell housing on my current transmission (H42 I think) bolt up to the 1HD-T/FT motor?

Will I encounter any clutch or transmission input shaft compatibility problems?

Are the motor mounts compatible and located in the same place on the frame?

Other than possibly repositioning the water inlets and outlets on radiator, can I use the same radiator and shroud?

I will need a new exhaust system as the exhaust exits on the right side on the 1HD-T/FT and the left side on the H. Any recommendations on exhaust pipe diameter?

Any engine bay size or other considerations that I am overlooking?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

"Will the bell housing on my current transmission (H42 I think) bolt up to the 1HD-T/FT motor?"
bellhousing will not. You need a 1992-1999 hz to h55 bellhousing. H55 w a 1hz input shaft has 21 splines. A 275 mm flywheel and clutch are off shelf, but ideal is 300 mm flywheel which needs a clutch disk w 21 spline not a toyota item but can be found for NPR trucks etc.

"Will I encounter any clutch or transmission input shaft compatibility problems?"
see above

"Are the motor mounts compatible and located in the same place on the frame?"
no, you are making yours. BTW, starter is very close to steering shaft and ideally on LHD trucks need a better solution.

If you have brass radiator you can solder fix many things. Why would you run an old radiator?

2 1/2 will work.

an hdt is not a drop in to a 4x series frame and involves a lot of fabrication and solutions (vacuum porting, fuel line size, air cleaner options etc etc).

My cure for you is to buy a 70 series and fit whatever your want.

Is the 2H engine readily available near you? I can't say I am a huge fan of putting a turbo on an indirect injected engine, but you could go the route of a 2H swap, and add a turbo. Still sadly, there are problems with that. You have to fab up your turbo setup, you should use an intercooler, and climbing steep grades will be the biggest danger to longevity due to high egt's - exactly what you need it to do. I am by no means an expert on the 2H or 2H-T, but it might be worth a read.

The 1Hx variants have different transmission input shaft splines like @rick_d said, so that is the problem there.

Thanks Rick and dogfish for your input. I will scrap the idea of dropping a 1HD-FT in my Troopy. I may have a line on a 12HT with H55 transmission attached.
