Guys,

My name is Dave Rushing. I live near Charlotte and I'm looking for an FJ40. I've been on and off the hunt for years. I've looked at and driven a lot of Fortys but never owned one. I've seen the craigslist gems out there currently (several of them in person) and the choices are pretty slim. I've seen the '79 Frankenstein rustbucket in Charlotte and the '71 in Lexington that looks waaay better in the pics than it does in person. If you guys know of a decent Forty for sale in my area in the $5-$7K range let me know. I can weld and do restoration work, having restored LBC's (Little British Cars) as a hobby over the years. Once I pick up a Forty I'll be signing up as your newest member...maybe even before, although y'all will no doubt give me a rash of crap because I normally 'wheel in a Jeep. I look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome to the addiction.

Good luck with the search!

Ryan

Guys,

I imagine JohnVee will have even more to talk about at our Charlotte Area gatherings if you are there. One in Mt. Holly was posted up late yesterday on the Charlotte Craigslist for $2.2k. I've not seen it posted before but suspect Forest4000 (Eric) has called on it as it must be practically in his backyard. It must be in terrible shape at that price.

Shane,

I saw that one on CL today. It has to be the same truck. I sent an email but haven't heard back. Did you ever get a chance to try to start it? It looks pretty rough IMO.

I probably started it 4 years ago and it smoked pretty bad. I was trying to get it for $1500.00 back then and even that was to high. It has a nice jack, but that's about it. I gave Al the directions to it. Location on Mt Island lake. The owner is a brother of a stone mason I work with.
I have his number if you still want to talk to him and he doesn't get back to you.
I mentioned in another thread that I was going to look at a project 40 sometime this week in Charlotte. I think he said it was a 78. I'll get pictures and post somewhere.

I looked at the '79. Driver, passenger and rear floors are either missing or swissed. Poor V8 swap job. Sills and rear corners are wasted. Broken/missing glass. Non-factory seats. Power steering gone. Fiberglass top in poor condition. No spare mount. Frame and axles look fair. That's about it. Not much original about this one. He says it runs but not well and it has a leaky radiator. I'd say the '76 is better.

I am amazed by the prices 40s are going for. I was offered $3K for mine a while back and it is in poor shape. Mine is RHD with 3 on the tree and the T-case shiftr is up on the dash. I think this is why I was offered so much.

Good luck with your search

Sounds like a cool setup. I haven't seen one like that. I am jealous. Fortys are fetching some pretty crazy prices these days. Bad time to be entering the market. I don't forsee prices getting any lower though. Chesnee....I was through there a few months ago on a MC ride. We rode 276 down from Maggie Valley and got on SC 11 and took it to Gaffney where we jumped on the interstate back home to Charlotte. Hwy 11 was an awesome road.

Going to look at the project today at 4 unless something comes up.
Owner said it is a 77 not what I thought earlier.
I will get some pictures of what I can and do a post.
Shane

No but I am a firm believer in their ideology and I support their cause. Truth is I don't get to ride much anymore. It seems like it has to be a special occasion for me to get out and ride. With two grade schoolers, scouts, karate and such I just don't have the time I used to. I've had a motorcycle since the age of six and I'm 44 now. There will always be at least one bike in my garage. Right now there's four and if I had my way I'd have a few more.
