Today I decided to replace the front and rear dome light with LED. If you have not done this, it's the best under $50 mod you can do! I got the light from George's LED, here is the LINK. He as a great write up on this install and here is how I did mine.

First I took the front dome light down, and removed the heat shield with my small snippers, plugged in the new LED, and added a little tape - done!

Next I did the rear. The LED does not fit between the bulb tabs, so you have to bend them in a little to make them fit. The way I did mine was to cut a little slit into the tabs, slide the light into the slit and used a touch of solder to hold the LED in place. Don't heat the solder up too much, you can melt the circuit board of the LED. Again a little tape and Iam done!

I hate you. That rig is awesome. I really miss my 3FE especially after having to replace my HG on the 80. Love watching the progress. Excellent job on those rear hubcaps. What was the source on the TEQ logo?

A/C Update

Today I had the A/C fixed. The compressor that was on the truck was squealing like a pig, and was on it way out.

I highly recommend "Mr. Freeze" here in Austin. He is a local a/c guy that works out of his house. 512-358-1385.

I dropped the truck off around noon, and he called me around 5pm and said the job was done. He even gave me a ride to Michelle's office down town after I dropped it off. He vacuumed down the system for a hour to around -28, installed the new compressor, and then charged the system up, and checked everything. He even took the extra time to fix a frayed wire and solder it, and even used heat shrink. He also checked a few other things and alerted me to a few I should fix. Great attention to detail.

It blows nice and cold around 45 degrees on the road, and I cost me a total of $488.76 (which is priceless to have a happy wife!). The ambient temperature in his garage was right at 97 degrees, and the A/C was blowing around 55 degrees in his shop.

Here was the break down:
labor: $200
36 OZ of R134a $25
8 Oz prag 150 compressor Oil and o rings $15
Rebuilt compressor from Austin Re-builders $225
New Drier $23.76

For those of you not in Austin or nearby, his garage was not abnormally warm. It was in the mid-90's here today (and yesterday). We had our 3 weeks of spring and I guess it's time to move on to summer...

p.s - hey Mark, hope all is well in your world.

Hey Randy. Actually, I went from a 4spd to a 5spd. I like the ratios, but I find the 5 spd really notchy/hard to shift (to the point I've always wondered if something is wrong).

I almost can't shift when it's cold and I have to shift very slowly the rest of the time. Not sure what's up.

I posted a question on the board, but didn't really get anything other than 'you need to break it in'. It's been a few months now. Then again, I don't think I've put but a few hundred miles on it It's not a daily driver. Heck, I don't know what one would be. I don't drive daily anyway...

My 4 speed on the 3FE40 is like that, Iam going to have it checked out. It might just be the top plate with the gates being worn down. Was your 5 speed new??

Are you free for Lunch on Monday - a few of us cruiser heads are getting together for lunch again.

Brand new, factory fresh.

Unfortunately, I'm gone all week. But, thanks for asking. It would be good to catch-up.

Then - It's broken, I'll be while while your out of town and take the entire truck off your hands. What are friends for.. ;)

Update on the A/C...

So it's been very hot here and the A/C was just not cooling. So I called my A/C guy.
He asked my to check the fan clutch..and I did. Is seemed like it was going out. After a trip to Auto Zone, $59, and a few :beer: I had installed a new fan clutch.

The A/C was still not cooling right. So David (Mr. Freeze) said to bring the truck over. After tweaking the system, and re tightening the compressor belt, the System blow around 40 Degrees on the low setting. Once I drove the truck on the highway - it was even better!!!

Did you install a non OEM fan clutch? They are usually undersized (smaller than stock) and will not move as much air. This has been detailed in past posts and also by MarkW in Toyota Trails.

The way that I found that I had a non OEM fan clutch was that my A/C guy mentioned that he thought my fan clutch was going out. I bought a new one from CDan without realizing that what I had wasn't OEM. When I got the old clutch off and compared it to the OEM version I was shocked at the size and weight difference of the two.
