On my 78 FJ40 (stock) I have an intermittent clicking noise coming from behind the black plastic vent tube.

There is no rhyme, time, or reasoning behind the clicking, it's totally intermittent.

This morning I started her up and then took a flash light and it only clicked for a moment but I thought it was coming from the carb cooling relay maybe? It was right there in that area.

It clicked while driving, parked, whenever (obviously only when started), but it's very annoying.

Is something "going out" or not getting enough voltage?

thanks!

My guess is that it is your voltage regulator (if it is still the original electro-mechanical type) Dallas.

While it is mounted in your engine bay, I find the sound readily travels inside the cab.

Mine was so loud (till I changed to a solid-state regulator) that I thought it was coming from my front driveshaft.

My original electromechanical:

Sweet - so might I ask where you found your solid state? Is it a quick part-store purchase?

It also appears wiring had to be modified slightly?

Thanks much!

If your "petrol 78 model" takes the same "6-wire regulator" as my "diesel 79 model" I can give you a good list of suppliers/part-numbers Dallas. (But without doing research I don't know whether it does or not.)

Perhaps you may like to post a photo of what you've got?

You may well have a different connector on your regulator too even if it is a 6-wire unit. (I understand they come with both "round" and "rectangular" connectors.)

And first I'd confirm that it is indeed the source of your clicking anyway (because this was just a "stab in the dark guess" by me).

My solid-state regulator came from REPCO which is roughly our equivalent to your NAPA stores.

When replacing your regulator it should be just "plug and play" with no need to alter anything at all. (Mounting holes or wiring.)
