Oh yeah, beautiful spot. I used to do a lot of skiing northeast of there, north of Leadville at placed called Ski Cooper. It was originally for training the Army's Mountain Division. Back then it wasn't as well known or advertised as the other ski places so it was like having the mountain to yourself. I would help the employees get finished and we would go hit the areas most people never see. Fun times.

I have been there in the summer for rock climbing.
Independence Pass nearby is a nice drive/ride also.

Who’s that on the far left in the very first picture? We could be brothers from another mother.

That's @elkun1

He's the one that keeps me cool and confident on the trails, or he just wants to see me bang my junk up!

I learned to ski at Ski Cooper way back when.

Independence Pass is amazing, everything about it.

Here's where it gets fun.

I need to rebuild my carb, it looks like it's siphoning fuel from the fuel bowl through the primary side somehow, Ima going to guess that running a couple thousand gallons of pure cornbred gasoline through the carb has gummed some stuff up.

I'm not certain on the proper rebuild kit that I'm going to need for this, it is a non-US spec carb, 21100-61012, dated 1992, Sept 23rd. The noted from JimC also state something about 81-84 poverty spec 2F.

I believe I used a rebuild kit for the 80-87 era 2F last time, Carburetor Rebuild Kit - Fits 8/1980 - 8/1987 FJ40/60 (CARB61171) - https://cruiserteq.com/carburetor-rebuild-kit-fits-8-1980-8-1987-fj40-60-carb61171/

Anyone have any solid input? Either way I'm probably calling @cruiseroutfit tomorrow.

Also found another annoying knock. I'm 100% sure that grease would help here.

Not to mention the spline portion of the pin is loose in the flange.

You know that if you’d mentioned you needed grease i could have helped you out lol. Still had the grease gun in the 40 from our Wyoming trip

We've had to make that same type of contraption out of logs, when jeeps broke their weak ass dana 35 axles. I'd hand the drive or passenger a qt of gear oil to pour on the tire while I was pulling them down the trail with the 40.

I believe that contraption and it origins need an explanation!!
we were 15-20 miles from the trailhead when he discovered the limit of his axle. broke right at the spline so we used a cutoff wheel and took out a hunk so there wouldn't be any heat build up or other issue then had to hold to tire in. def knew when it needed regreased when you could smell burning wood and rubber. lots of winching and pulling getting it thru the rough spots. was a fun trip.

Wheel off, big log chained in place underneath on a slant and used as a skid. Put in 4H or 4L and drive out on the front axle as best you can.

Way back in the day, Grampa Red dragged around a big stump with his 4 banger jeep while waiting for brake parts.

Field Expedient, was what we called it in the signal corps

that idea was discussed but we knew it wasn't going to get any easier ahead plus had a water crossing that we didn't know what the bottom was other than the water was around 3 ft deep. had to be on all 4 wheels if possible. with the further obstacles that needed winching him thru when he couldn't make it with just front wheel drive it was the right decisison. when we found a spot with cell reception my boy got ahold of a buddy who tried to find an axle, couldn't find the 28 spline only the newer 31 so onward we went. it was somewhere around 20 miles to where we could get a trailer into. ratchet straps are your friend

From my experience with wheeling with 90's jeeps your trail repair is The Standard Operating Procedure. Your execution is flawless except for the use of grease. The jeepers prefer gear oil.

So true Wasatch Jay! A buddy of mine has always had one and they have always sucked! So now he has a new 4 door hybrid Jeep and it gets the Death Wobbles on the highway when he is turning and hits a bump in the road!?!? WTF! Jeep engineers haven't figured their way around the death wobbles? It's 2025 for god's sake! They should be shut down and pulled of the roads! What's even worse is that he has always had Jeeps and so he doesn't see it as a big issue? He has taken it back once and they changed the steering stabilizer? Surprise, still does it.... I am going to have to say something because his daughter is about to start driving and I would hate for it to happen to her on cause an accident. I cannot believe Jeep hasn't been sued for this? I googled it and it is all over the web. I have driven and continue to drive a lot of old vehicles and the last one that had the death wobbles was a 1973 Suburban with 38' ground hogs and a 6" lift. I was in high school and I fixed it after the second time it happened. Just insane to me that a modern vehicle would have this problem! My '64 Landcruiser doesn't nor does my '78. END RANT, sorry.......
