Hey 200 series owners,

I currently own a 99 LC and love it. My parents love it so much they want to buy a newer (used) 200 series. I talked numbers today at a Toyota dealership on a 2011 Cruiser with 70k miles in white. It is in great shape with weather tech, clear bra, bug shield, 2 owners (Utah and Colorado), and looks like no kids were in it.

The dealership was asking $49,500 & were talked down to $46,750. I am not able to post a link or pictures as it is not online yet. Just curious as I do follow the prices on these pretty religiously and know what to look for. I have looked at 3 this week and this is by far the best of the 3. Before they spend that much money on a used car with 70k miles I just need reassurance or deterrence on whether or not it is a good deal.

Please keep in mind this is in Colorado where there is a premium on these for the most part.

Better look underneath, as Colorado uses some truly NASTY road treatment for snow.
Check for serious rust.

If rust is an issue, I would suggest that you consider looking west of you to LA area, as you'll find a lot of truly spotless, snow-less cruisers.

I bought my 2008 with only 48k miles on it for $39k 18 months ago and even the paper parts stickers on the undercarriage were free of dirt stains, etc. Drives like new. Mileage and condition are more important (in my opinion) than the model year of 200s between 2008-2011.

I live in Colorado and have zero rust underneath my previous 2008 that had 115k miles on it before I sold it and 25k on my current 2014 with zero rust. I don't think Colorado is part of the rust belt but never had an issue on any of my vehicles regarding rust. The only issue is what the salt here does to chrome...gives it a pitted look...vey annoying.

Thanks, I appreciate it. It didn't have any rust whatsoever. I do realize the 08-11's are virtually the same, so the year didn't really matter much to me. It was more or less the miles and condition of it. I would've been open to anything with lower miles and priced $35k-$45k.

Personally I would have no issue looking abroad, although since it is for my parents it would make traveling extremely difficult.

An update to the thread is they did go ahead and purchase it. The plan is they drive it for a little while and when they are ready to sell it ill either buy it and build it as an upgrade from my 100 series or look for a different one.

Thanks for the input!

Yeah Colorado is really not part of the rust belt. Ive never had an issue in any of the cars I've purchased from Colorado with regards to rust. Correct me if I'm wrong but Colorado and Wyoming, where I also primarily drive, don't use salt. If so, its no where near the amount used back east.

The only rust I've had on a car here was on my 1984 Toyota pickup truck, but that was not a surprise, the beds on those are infamous for rust. Ive heard its mainly due to the bed metal coming from the U.S. and it being of less quality.

I keep hearing that, but have never had an issue with rust on any of my vehicles and I have lived here all my life. Not sure how true that is.

I think we don't have an issue below 7,000ft here in Colorado as we don't get constant snow storms and many folks including myself hit the car wash once the temp gets above 38f. Car lines are more busy in the winter here then summer for obvious reasons. 300 days of sunshine here in Co so we don't have as much snow on the road needing M.C.

Typical weekly winter weather here in Denver/Boulder area

Mon.18f snow
Tues. 22f snow
Wed. 32f clear
Thurs. 36f clear
Fri. 48f clear
Sat. 29f clear
Sun. 49f clear

Good to hear.

It wasn't personal experience, so I'm sure you locals know better than I do. Christo described the stuff they use in the area as worse than typical road salt...but perhaps it's not frequently needed?

Glad to hear it's not a huge issue, as my wife and I are very seriously considering a move to CO. :)

It's rarely used. What helps is that our climate is very dry and we have abundant car washes that sprays the under carriage to keep the salt off. Just get it washed within a week of snow storm and your car will be fine.

You'll love it here.

No he wont

It sucks, its cloudy and cold 340 days a year

people can't afford to eat and beg for scrapes

The state tax is 20%

You don't want to move here :D

Man I just looked at the underside of my rig and the rust is so caked on it is falling on the garage floor

Ha!

Don't worry.. I'm not really Californian. Born in South America to US citizens, and lived/worked all over tarnation. My dad lived in Denver as a kid.

Promise we won't ruin the state. ;))))

But as the guy who replaced me after my stint in C-Springs said "there is no air in the air".

Hey 200 series owners,

I currently own a 99 LC and love it. My parents love it so much they want to buy a newer (used) 200 series. I talked numbers today at a Toyota dealership on a 2011 Cruiser with 70k miles in white. There's a premium on the LC pretty much everywhere.

My 2013 had 49k miles on it when I bought it in January. It was just under 2 years old and was Toyota CPO and meticulously maintained. I paid $49k, which was the best price for a comparable LC in the country at the time - most were going for $52-55k with 35-40k miles.

Recent auctions for "average" condition 2013 models with 80k on them were $41-44.5k. 2011 with 49-87k miles a few months back were similar. Auction prices won't tell you what you will pay, but they should give you an indication of what the dealer paid (or gave as a trade-in).

As other noted, crawl underneath and look for rust. Check the KDSS valves and see if you can get the dealership mechanic to demonstrate they open 1-2 turns, especially if you ever intend to lift the vehicle (though really any suspension work even on a stock LC may require you to open them down the road). Check the brake pads since the LC is heavy and will go through front brakes quickly.

To answer your subject, $46k seems like a fair price. A "great" deal would probably be $43-44k. Looking at CarGurus there's a 2013 with similar mileage with a similar list price near Denver. It's tan/gold (which I've grown to really like) but if you really want white I recommend you use it as leverage to try and bargain the white one down to ~$45k. It's an Autonation dealership, and in my experience they tend to drop the price after 30 days if a vehicle doesn't sell, so end of next week the price may be lower if it's still there.
