This is the first time it’s happened. Turned it on and the warning lights did not turn off as usual.

Alternator is not putting out enough volts (see above). The voltmeter (upper right in the instrument cluster) needle is below horizontal which means under 12 volts, should be something like 13.5 when idling.

Thanks for all the help. Is it enough to test it in the vehicle or do I need to pull it and test it on a bench?

Can I replace the brushes or does it have to be the whole thing?

I tested the alternator while in the car with a multimeter. Diode check is good. Reads nothing on one end and 500 when swapping the leads. What else could it be?

Alternator. It can pass the diode check and still be bad. Did you have a shop run a check on it? Look at your voltmeter, its way low while the engine is on ie your alt is not putting out.

You can test the output of the alternator with a voltmeter if its 14.3 then maybe its the cable between your battery and alt / fusible link. But 9.9 times out of 10 in this situation its the alternator.

Thanks. I pulled it and the parts store wouldn't test it because it was covered in oil. I guess I'll replace it.

In the process of removing it, the 3 wire connector broke into pieces. Does anyone know the part number to replace it?

What three wire connector? The one that plugs into the alternator?

And if an alternator gets covered in mud,oil or something else it will not function correctly

Yes, the one that plugs into the alternator. It was brittle from age/heat and broke apart when removing it from the old alternator.

Same thing just happened to me. I replaced the alternator last night and said a prayer over the brittle wires. All the lights are off again and my volts are back to normal now. I ordered the Denso alternator off Amazon for $140, arrived in 2 days.

That's one clean looking steering wheel. The factory leather on mine looks old and Haggard.

Ah yes. Reminds me when alternator failed on the 100 at the beginning of a trip. In the haste to move all luggage to my car a bottle of 20yr pappy van winkle went to ground.
Shame on you for not packing it in a pelican case and wrapping in three rolls of duct tape.
