Morning guys I'm having a problem with an Aisin single barrel that's on my 1968 FJ55. It flooded the engine out and I figured it was a bad adjustment on the float. I ordered a Keyster kit and received it, but found something that mystifies me. Referring to the F engine manual pages 5-8, 5-9 fig 5-11, Parts 39 Snap ring, 24 Step up rod spring, 26 Step up rod, and the stud that goes into 38 the lifter rod are missing. It also has a 150 main jet. The kit came with a 270 main jet, was there a change where they deleted the step-up rod and went instead to a fixed jet of 150? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The step up rods were not used in 1968, but there is a fair amount of literature that says it was. This is one of the reasons why I tell people the FSM is not the Bible.

Here’s another clue: the power valve and the metering rod were mutually exclusive.

Thanks for the reply guys, I appreciate the response, It answered a lot of questions I had. This all started because I was having problems getting it to start. Just found the float full of fuel so I guess its time to either repair or find another way off float.

Thought I had the float sealed but it failed does anyone know where I can get a replacement float for a Aisin single Barrel carb?

I’ve used a 2-barrel float and trimmed it to fit. It’ll require a little trial-and-error adjustment after.

I did this on one of my F135’s a few years ago as a temporary measure and it ended up working so well that I never bothered to put a new float in. So far so good.

Here’s the nitrophyl float Splangy mentioned can be modified.

The 1bbl float has been NLA for years now, and it was a soldered brass piece o' poo that always failed. Switching to the nitrophyl has been a win-win.

1bbl carb float is 21209-60010 (discontinued).

2bbl carb float (which can be modified to fit 1bbl) is 21209-33011.

Ran across this possible option also:meh:

This is an old question but I thought I would post a solution. FWIW, the float for a Chevy Carter W1 carburetor (1932 - 1949) works perfectly in my FJ40 Aisan D40 1bbl carburetor. They seem to be readily available in the market.

I took pulled the carb apart and drained the fuel out of the float. It had a poor solder joint where the halves are soldered together. I also saw what appeared to be two cracks.

cleaned it up real good and using flux soldered up the halves and the cracks. Time will tell how my soldering worked. Thank you all for your replies, I was quoted $90 for a replacement one, from an online carb shop.

I don't know the part numbers. I think you could order both floats from Mikes Carb parts. Just did a quick search not sure which float is correct.

Not sure which carter might work.

Was this the whole 68 model production? Over the years I bought parts out of wrecking yards just to be prepared for the future. Couple of one barrel carburetors I bought had tags saying 1966. Years later when I finally looking at them and know how to date them they are late 67 and 68 dates. Been a few months since I looked at them but believe the sight glass was smaller on the newer ones. Would this be correct and was the sight glass the only difference?

For reference
The three loose small one barrel window carburetors I have.

On the left the oldest with the smaller sight glass.

Middle that appears to have been rebuilt with the sight glass backwards. 12/67 Has part of wire I believe was from a wrecking yard inventory tag.

Right one which is 6/68. Paper tag is dry rotted but says 63 Toyota Land Cruiser.

The 10/67 has the two barrel to one barrel adapter. Has a small tube which not sure what it is for. Has the small copper tube off the carburetor for the vacuum to the distributor.

The 7 only means that the carb was made in a year that ENDS in 7. Most likely, it was 1977, because the original production units all had the larger sight that your other two carbs have.

And IIRC, the smaller tube next to the PCV was for the ABV.

believe it or not. i was hiking in woods where my family had a toyota dealership years ago. this was about 20 years ago. i saw a carter W1 carb. i put it in barn. i took it apart. the float is identical to the one out of my asia sd40. it tested out fine in boiling water. no leaks. who says hoarding does not pay. thank you.
