That what curiserparts.net calls it but what the heck is an Exhaust Heat Riser?

Can someone tell me what/where the bottom end of this hose should connect to or better yet provide a picture. A picture would be greatly appreciated.

When I took the air cleaner off my 79 2F engine the bottom end of this hose was hanging freely down the side of the engine. I assumed that was how it was supposed to be until I came across this graphic showing a hose clamp on the bottom end of the hose.

I found several postings related to this hose but frankly they just confused me because I can’t find anything on my engine that I think it could attach to nor any holes that appear to be plugged.

I thought I had a stock 79 2F engine with all the emissions stuff in place but now I’m wondering if a PO swapped out some parts.

I decided not to send any pictures of the engine with this post because I’m not sure what portion of the engine I should focus on. I’ll gladly post pictures of my engine (it’s currently on an engine stand) if you tell me what section to focus on.

On this 79 there are 2 bolts with this stuff hanging down. I was wondering if there was a paper/fiberglass type of shield that has deteriorated.

There was a heat shield around the exhaust manifold.
The air cleaner would devert the flapper in it to draw heated air from around the exhaust.

This is the California version of a heat riser shield.

If my rig required a heat riser I would leave if off until smog inspection day. Cooler air going into the engine makes more H.P., plus there is no sensor to tell the engine the hot air riser is missing.

I'm still trying to figure out what the heat riser looks like and where exactly it mounts. I can't tell from the pictures that have been posted.

Rusty 72 what is the string like material hanging down? I have a remnant and have been wondered what it was from.

Here are some picture of my engine.

See item 30? It bolts to the front of the exhaust manifold using the two bolts on the outboard face of the manifold. The flexible metal tube you show in your first post connects to the fitting on the heat riser insulator. The scrap you have hanging from the lower bolt is what remains of the burned-up insulator (asbestos or some other fibrous material).

The 3-bolt location you show below your manifold should be the mounting location for an OEM power steering pump.
