Thingfisher, it does NOT obscure the license plate at all. In fact the camera is tucked under the cargo door and it is hard to see the camera standing directly behind the vehicle.
Its raining here today, so these pictures are pretty bad.
Here is a picture of the camera and my license plate. I actually had to squat down and slighty point my phone up to actually get the back up camera in the picture.
Here some other pictures with the cargo door raised so that you can see how it installs:
Here is one with the camera module hanging out. You can see the gray thing sticking out of the back is the original license plate light bulb socket that sticks into the camera module (this way the license plate light still does it's job). The whole thing just clips up in the hole.
Lastly, here is an image of the view on my head unit. Sorry there isn't more in the image, but I was at work and just took a quick picture. Also, the image looks a little weird because I took it from the side instead of straight on... If you look at the bottom of the camera image, you can see my bumper (and my hitch receiver just barely sticking out - with a ball installed you see the ball really well), and the truck in the top right of the camera view is about 35 feet away. This field of view will very depending on the camera lens, I just wanted you to see what mine looks like since the camera alignment is fixed.
Again, pulling the wiring is the most difficult job, especially getting it through the cargo door and through the rubber sleeve into the interior of the cargo area. It takes a little planning and I did do some splicing (but this is required for any reverse camera). But I know the wiring is well protected and always there. Sorry I don't have pictures of running the wiring, I did it a couple of years ago. Its not that hard, it just takes some time and you do have to pull some of the cargo door trim, and trim in the cargo area. Once the wiring is in the interior cargo area, its easy to run the wire to the front of the vehicle, just start pushing it between the trim and the carpet, and under the door sills; its a pretty quick path to the front and up to underneath the dash...
If you have more questions or want more pictures, let me know.
Hope this helps.
