I think @2001LC tends to overthink things sometime :p personally I think the latch mechanism/hood pin just gets worn over time causing the wobble. You can adjust it with the rubber adjustment knobs, until it gets to the point where body panels start to become misaligned. That's when you buy a new latch. This has been the example with several Toyota's I've owned.

I over think things all the time;)

You may want to go back and read a little closer, adjustment knobs and latch was already covered.:bang:

I knew he already covered the knobs, but he has yet to replace the latch/pin

Bringing this thread back for a slightly different issue with my hood now...

After pulling the hood release tab below the steering column, the lock does not release for the hood to "pop up". The cable is not broken since I can hear it when my wife pulls the release, but the lock is somehow stuck. Any advice on how to remedy this DIY-style?

:hmm: I have all kinds of issues. Mine won't pop open either and I also have a shaky hood at speed. Of course mine has also rolled over like a fat piggy once so there is that.

Still determined to fix it though.

^^^ You can file the latch holes on the body bit bigger and move the latching mechanism down. This will hold the hood tightly closed as well as will pop right up when you open it.

Also try lubing the mechanism to loosen any frozen parts.

Turn the hood adjusters (one on each side) CCW (out), so the hood is held up higher when closed. This put increase pressure on hood latch, acting as spring to hood release handle. In turn this will hold hood tight so it doesn't chatter at high speeds. If hood is higher then fender turn adjusters CW (in) to lower hood, but not to point hood moves (up & down (chatter)) when closed.

Also if front bumper has kissed anything, it may have bent hood support. Hood support has and outward bow. A kiss to bumper will push this in eliminating bow pushing up on hood latch. This hood support and upper bumper support is being pulled straight just before replacing parts. This gets everything lined back up.

If hood is above fender once spot is found where it's just held tight and has spring load to open. You then may need to loosen bolts to pull down hood latch. Which will only move a tiny bit. Bolts can be loosened, then hood latch pressed down and left or right to aid in alignment.

If you look close you'll see hole is slightly larger than stud to allow for adjustment.

Thanks! If and when I do finally get my hood open, I'll be sure to look into adjusting the latch as pointed out.

Have you pull up on hood while release is being pulled, should do it. If not try pushing down first, latch may not have fully set on close.

Finally got the hood open after having someone apply upward pressure on it while I pulled the hood release lever. Turns out the latch mechanism had started to rust and the moving parts were partially seized up. #9 in diagram.

Mine (2000) doesn't have rubber bumpers and the latch ring (the part in the hood) has a good bit of wear on it. I'd like to replace it but I don't see a way to do that.

Bringing back an old thread. If your truck is really nice or you are worried about dents I don’t recommend this but a fix that worked on my 80 that I will be using on my 100 is as follows.

Open the hood part way so you can put some downward pressure above the latch bar on the hood with one hand. Now go in your toolbox and get a big hammer, I have a 5 pound mini sledge. With one hand put downward pressure on the hood, you will need some sort of prop to keep the hood open, now with your other hand give the bar some “adjustment taps”. You will probably need to do this a couple times checking to see if the play is gone or not.

Bringing back up. Seems i have the issue below, which just surfaced. I pull lever, but no longer pop. I have to get out and "use finger tips" between the grill top and hood to pop. Rather than move rubber adjusters on hood, is there a way to tighten cable? Like the device on an old school bike cable brake, the barrel adjusters at the lever? I'm sure if there were, it would've been mentioned, but figured ask anyway on cable tightening, besides the main latch described above.

I've not seen any and cable doesn't show.

The way it's done is with adjusting hood. If maxed or hood to high, I'd look to at:
That cable and pull latch are secured properly .
For hood or latch's hook damage.
For front end damage, that pushed radiator support in and latch up. I've had to pull support arm (seen in post #28 above) that was bent, to pull down latch.

Do your hood shocks normally hold the hood up on their own once opened? If they are shot, they won't pop the hood up automatically...

Hood shocks, only take load off and hold open hood. They're not needed to pop open hood. See post #28 above; Adjustors, in first picture set hood level and tension. Tension on latch is needed, for it to release. The more you turn out adjustors, the more you raise hood. Those the greater the tension on latch.

Go remove the hood shocks and report back. I did, and my hood didn't move at all when I hit the release.

I just replaced my hood shocks when I repainted my hood and regained this functionality, so it was at top of mind. My old ones were totally shot.

Try adjusting your hood adjustors all the way in, and report back.

Will do. You sure you want me to turn them all the way in?? That would seem like less pressure on the hood. Out (CCW) would increase pressure.

Hope you'll have the courtesy to do the same for my request of you.
