Adding e-locker to 06? (2 Viewers)

That is a great question. Toyota epc shows that the LSD and open rear diff were both available in 1999. Whether or not they were actually ordered and shipped that way to the US I don't know bu a VIN should determine that for you. I've personally not run across an LX470 rear LSD diff. Either way every rear 100/470 diff be it open, LSD or locked is 4 pinion.

Awesome, thanks Kurt! I did run the VIN on our LX, and it does register LSD. Very strange the lack of clarity on that one, but I guess we are talking about a narrow segment of the 100 series...

Sorry for the crappy wording of my question, I went back and cleaned it up.

I inquired about a LX470 LSD years ago after finding one on MUD the owner would not recommend it claimed it was a POS but if I wanted it was free plus shipping.

Did you end up using it? I am wondering how these perform when wheeling. This will be the wife's DD, not sure how much she would like a locker...

She just doesn't know she needs one yet, so . . .

No, based on the owner saying it was a POS.

Consider an Aussie locker? Possible the best of both worlds.

I have an Aussie in the 40, I can drive it okay, but I would go selectable for her.

I know the A-TRAC works pretty well if you trust it, but this truck turned up at the right time, and was at a price point we could do.

So I guess I will find out how the LSD does! I don't see much posted about its performance though...

My wife loves the lockers. True story- last year, @ginericLC and I were doing Fins n Things, me in my 80, him in his FZJ60. We went out as dusk was coming which turned into darkness quickly. That trails has some sketchy places on it when you cannot see well. Anyway, there were 2 times when my wife was freaking out - she doesn't like to be on the edge of a hill/mountain at all, afraid of heights. Once she saw what that "knob" could do the first time, she said to me on the second without hesitation, "Turn the damn knob Jason!". I obliged, it performed it's magic and escaped the situation at hand.

So take her on a precarious trail with a truck that IS locked, explain to her what lockers can do, and she will be a fan for life! Automatic WAF there!

Hopefully you won't have a bad trip, brother.

Per the lil sticker on the rear axle, my 98 is equipped with a lsd too. I have a complete e locked 98 rear lc axle left over from the 2uz 55 donor, but am going to leave the lsd on the lx in place and see how it does.

I might have to come bug you about that locker...

And, I do not have that sticker, but the VIN says "LSD"

I suspect the LSD on any 98-99 LX would need to be rebuilt/reshimmed at this point in time to be of any benefit. I purchased my LX with 90k and the LSD didn't seem to help any. It was promptly changed out for lockers. :)

I'd do it and I'd leave the 4.30 gears in the elocker and swap the front to 4.30 also. 4.30 gears with the 5 speed auto and a 34" or tall 33" x 11.50 or so would be perfect in a 100. I've looked at the Harrops and they interest me but the price wasn't where I needed to be. I'm looking at locking an 80 up right now. I really like ARBs and I've always been satisfied with them, but when the price went over 1k each they sort of lost me as a customer. Now that it is coming back down I might be able to buy into them again. And Kurt did a better job of explaining the pinion situation than I could have. Late model 100s can add a locker for traction, early model 100s with the two pinion carrier need to add them to strengthen the front end. My 99 broke on a hill on a two track road. I wasn't on a trail or even on it hard when it snapped. Unless you are strictly a pavement pounder adding a locker to the front of an early truck is a smart idea. And I don't think it is a bad idea for an ATRAC equipped truck that is getting used for trail duty. ATRAC works but it adds stress to the drivetrain so beef it up.

It might not be as bad as you think. It might all be there minus the axle to body section. I did this to an 80 and I had to add only 4 wires running from the DS footwell to the rear harness. The switch plug and the ECU plug and the front diff plug and wires were all there. Find somebody with a locked one to compare.
