I have read a lot about the Autometer line, they make some nice stuff.

But, I have an older Stewart Warner (SW) - they make some pretty high quaity gauges as well I read. It is lighted also. The PO mounted it to the left of the cluster. I like it there. RPM's at 9k are more than my rig needs, but it works perfect. has a little rotating ring that allows you to move a little indicator to your desired shifting point - that lights up as well at night.

when it dies, I will go to something like a Autometer with a 5-6k max.

Horns are for hippies.

in CA, it is required and upon inspection, they can hold you up for not having a working horn.

I put in air horns in mine! they are awesome and very distinctive.

I have the same 2.5" sunpro. Power for light, ground wire and the last wire to the positive side of the coil.

shouldn't that wire be hooked up to the negative of the coil? I have the same one and directions say negative. works great.

Hi All:

I highly recommend a tach in a F or 2F powered rig. Set the "redline" at 4K; that is plenty high for the old tractor motor!

I have a small "SunPro" unit mounted with hose clamps at the base of the steering column of my FJ40.

A lot of folks don't realize how 'freakin loud these rigs can get when going 70 mph; they think the rig is topped-out at 50!

Regards,

Alan

Ive got a 5" monster tach mounted to the dash. Works pretty good and the light in it lights up the cruiser well at night....

I have an autometer 6000rpm tach..model number 2306.
nice size...2 3/4 inch. big enough to see but it doesn't hide the spedo.
the best thing about it is highway cruising at 3k has the needle poinitng straight up......you get a good read with just a quick glance.
easy installation,too:
1. black wire to ground
2. green wire to +coil
3. red and white twisted together and pinched between a fuse and the fuse clip (don't forget to splice in a 1amp inline fuse to the red wire) so the tach and the light get power when the key is turned

4K should be plenty for a stock 2F. You wouldn't want to take a 2F higher than that unless its a higher performance build, particularly one that has seen balancing. Then you're probably good to 5K possibly even more (if you dare!)

Matt
??? I turn stock 2Fs over 4000 routinely. Even ones with 300,000+ miles.

You don't want to cruise it at those speeds, but running through the gears is another thing.

IMHO a 40 grand tach is not enough for a 2F. And if your keeping it under 3000... You never make any power and merging in traffic has GOT to be miserable. ;)

I wish my PO didn't do what he did

Cut the dashboard? :whoops: I like them stock. I would never have done it, and almost skipped buying it because of it.

The only redeeming qualities are that he did a nice job locating it so it's useful, and it is very nice to have a tach.

You can see in the picture that he carefully cut the lower dash pad to mold around the tach. It's looks almost OEM. I think the guage is VDO.

This is a crop from another photo that happens to show the location. Sorry for the quality.
