According to Autoweek magazine the FJ cruiser is a reality

All of Toyota's marketing regarding the FJ Cruiser for the past two years indicates: body on frame, V6, 4wd with transfer case, and would be (relatively) cheap to develop if using the Taco platform, that is what keeps my hope alive :) , maybe it will fill the niche left by the 4runner as it has gone more "upscale" in price/features. No ,I don't think it will have standard winches, detatchable GPS, etc. but hope the rig will be a solid 4x4.
 
All of the plastic panels remind me of a chevy avalanche or aztec.... Too fugly for me....

At least it is Toyota anyway and is not 40$ I hope :)

Betcha it carries reliability.. may not wheel like an earlier FJ but that is what those were made for specifically- this one looks like the urban cruiser.

The fact that it is coming from Japan supports that it will be based on the 120 series. Think 2 door 4Runner with different sheet metal.
 
To be a true Land Cruiser it needs to be built at the Araco factory, as mine was and most (few exceptions like FJ45 pickup, etc...) of yours. I'm going to the NAIAS, and will take lots of pics, and hopefully will load them on here for all to see. I'll let you know my findings, I'll be on it like a college boy on free pizza! (wait, I AM a college boy...)
 
I'm not sure why folks think it will be a true Land Cruiser. It's not even going to be sold as one. True, they are poaching the name and will undoubtably market the Hell out of the similarities, but I have not seen "Land Cruiser" anywhere on this vehicle.

It will be a Toyota FJ Cruiser or a Scion fJ.

I think it will be a losing idea for them to market it as a new Land Cruiser in the US. The American public can not deal with a brand within a brand. If they call it a Land Cruiser, it will confuse those who think that a Land Cruiser is a luxury status symbol. Toyota sure doesn't want that.
 
So it looks like the two pessimists (I call us realists) Rustycruiser and Exiled are betting the farm that Toyota is gonna make a mass produced and marketed, cute-ute, mall crawler, poseur Rav4 like SUV that has some resemblances style wise to an FJ40. The rest of you optimists are hoping and dreaming that this is the day Toyota sees the light and rewards an insignificant niche segment of the purchasing population with the offroad truck of your dreams.

I too will eat crow with Henry if we are wrong! When is the Chicago show? February?
 
I just hope that the powers that be at Toyota finally deign to let us Norte Americanos have the option of diesel. There was a big article in last Friday's Wall St. Journal about the reincarnation of the diesel in America. They profiled the Jeep Liberty CRD, the Volkswagen Passat TDI, and the BMW 740d ($70,000) among other vehicles now or soon to be available in the U.S. market. But where the heck is Toyota?

I don't think its out of the question for the FJ Cruiser to come with a locking diff and low range transfer case, etc. I don't think it will be a "Rav4" type of vehicle. I mean, look at Nissan's 05 Xterra. You can price one out with the offroad package for $27k, and that includes 32" tires, low range t-case, electronic locking rear diff, bilstein shocks, hill descent control and hill start assist, clutch interlock bypass system, and the rear cargo area is all rubber/vinyl. I'm getting a new vehicle, and I'm actually debating between the getting xterra and waiting for the FJ cruiser to roll out to see what it will actually have. I do doubt the FJ will have any sort of winch, but the rest of the features are doable. I really wish that hard top was removable though.

Turbo-diesel hybrid with lockers plus all the American features, under $30k. Check. :D

Who Needs a Road? Most Americans do, and most of Toyota's American market does. :rolleyes:

Toyota already built the simple, rugged, utilitarian trail rig--and if you want to buy one, you still can, but it's used. Now, if you want a new vehicle that *looks* like you're a rugged individualist, there are a lot on the market. . . . . :rolleyes:
 
The Wrangler is not insignificant in terms of sales. There must be 20 in the parking lot at my high school. I don't find it strange that Toyota wants a piece. Expecially since it recognizes that the youth market is important to the future. Toyota is definately a company with a long term business plan.

I don't think the characterization that we optimists think that we are going to get a Toyota built Rubicon is fair. I'm just saying that Toyota has given the impression that the FJ will be an inexpensive, basic, utilitarian, body on frame, "adventure"-capable vehicle.

I would be pretty happy with a modern 4-Runner the way it was when they introduced the 4-Runner, as opposed to the vehicle the Runner has grown to.

Was the 85 4-Runner a Land Cruiser? No Way. Did it turn out to be a pretty damn good vehicle dispite IFS, FI, and plasticy interior? You bet. That's what I'm hoping the FJ will be.
 
The NAIAS is this weekend, and we will know for sure in two days. I have my hopes for the FJ and I have my doubts. Only time will tell. By the way, doesn't the Hummer have IFS and IRS?

I believe you'll have to wait till Feb. 9-10 when the "media only" show starts and Feb. 11-20 for public viewing.

Terrax is right, the NAIAS was/is Jan 9-23, the produciton FJ is set to debut at the Chicago Auto Show in February.
 
Wow, lots of reading in this thread.

My $0.02...if it's based on the Tacoma platform, or atleast that drivetrain why wouldn't it atleast have a rear locker? Every TRD Tacoma has that, and honestly those things fricken rock...it is shocking where you can take a bone stock TRD truck, the only problem they have is too much ass hanging out there. If this is basically that vehicle with less overhang out back, same power, or more...damn dude, that sounds sweet.

As Gumby pointed out, Toyota has made LOTS of great vehicles that don't happen to be Land Cruisers. Also a bone stock FJ40 is not a stellar 4wheeler, no lockers, not alot of suspension travel, not alot of power, not great brakes, etc...so anything they make now would be light-years ahead of that as far as useability, maybe not component quality but Tacomas aren't exactly a dime a dozen, those things last and are tough trucks...
