Thanks @flintknapper I i was able to remove the snap ring with pick tool. I put everything back together but still have a slight grind and wobble.

Is it the compressor?

Do you have a video? Sounds like you and I have the same issue. I have a thread with a video somewhere around.

I was told by a local mechanic that if I replaced one compressor I need to replace all of it.....$1500 or so...not sure if that is accurate but I need to get mine fixed with warm temps around the corner. Funny thing is my AC cools great.

Edit: Just realized we were correspondeing in my thread last month. I still haven’t done all of that. Catching up on other maintenance!

I added a video to the thread. My bearing was like yours. I replaced it but still have a mild wobble from pulley and mild grinding noise. I think it’s also a compressor problem. Just need to verify.

So does anyone know if the compressor is on its way out?

No way to know about the compressor until you turn the shaft on the compressor. In your video you are spinning the compressor pulley which is doing what it should (freely spin until the electromagnetic clutch engages and drives the compressor).

You should NOT be hearing any sort of grinding sound from spinning the pulley alone (Unless you have a bad bearing, no air gap or something is physically between the clutch plate.)

IF you were to hear that same sound while turning the compressor shaft...then yes chances are good you have an issue with the compressor.

There isn't really that much inside the compressor that will make a grinding sound (save for broken parts).

It's basically a swash plate, pistons, half dome bearings and some reed valves.

Look at your air gap first.

I only saw one spacer/washer when I removed the pulley. There was scoring on the pulley. Took some pics of The removal process. Maybe there is something you can tell on the pulley that would make it wobble a little? I replaced the bearing and don’t know if it went in crooked. Don’t think so though.

Maybe I didn’t push the stater/magnet far back enough also? I removed it to clean the mating surfaces.

Does this sound better? This is after I installed new bearing.

It sounds better than mine. How many banana job was changing out the bearing? Do you have a link to the exact bearing? I need to see if it helps mine.

It’s a 2.5 banana job. There a link to it on this thread one page back. I can help you when ready. I’ll be putting a guide together ASAP with pics.

You will need a long 12” screw driver, bearing, long pick tools from HF, 10mm socket, 12” pry bar, small hammer and 1/2lb hammer for removing/installing bearing.

Watch some videos to prep. I’ll help you with it! If you want my # that’s okay also.

Thanks. I definitely want to try this before I shell out the coin for a total replacement.

Is yours working well so far?

Were you able to get a write up together? Starting to get warmer and mine is sounding crazy....

I replaced the bearing today and posted pictures on another thread titled air-con compressor magnetic clutch change. See post 27, 28 etc.

Removed the drive belt
Removed 10 mm bolt on clutch
Pull the clutch out and be ready to catch the shim (washer: shown at the last picture: see below the clutch)
Remove the C-clip: The toughtest job due to its location!!
Pull the pulley (should slide out easly)
Press out the old bearing in the pulley
Install the new bearing to pulley and bend the tabs to retain bearing
Install the pulley back on to the compressor
Insert the shim (washer) into the clutch and slide it on to the compressor shaft
install the 10 mm bolt
Put back the drive belt!

Awesome man! Hows it sounding? Can you still hear a slight grinding?

No sound at all with the new bearing. When the engine ia running at idle, I hear nothing but injector opening and closing noise.

I wonder if the bearing i got does not have enough grease. I still hear a slight grinding. Or i need to replace the entire assembly?

What is the make of the bearing? Any Japanese bearing is the way to go. I once used a Chinese on my corolla and it lasted 6000 milrs and made noise again. I saw a guy selling nsk bearings on ebay
