I've got an issue that started about 3 months ago that I cant track down. I'll try to describe it:

This is primarily noticeable in OD or 3rd when driving over 50mph. When I start to decelerate and throttle is very light, it feels like the transmission is jumping rapidly between gears. I dont think its actually changing gears because the rpms dont change, or at least not drastically (maybe 100rpm). Its pretty repeatable. I've done the following that may have an affect on this:

  1. about a year ago, adjusted the TPS because of some idle issues (per FSM). Idle is great now - including idle up for AC and higher idle at startup.
  2. Replaced both axles with factory lockers (year ago). did knuckle job on the front at the time.
  3. Truck is non-abs, brakes have been bled and work fine.
  4. replaced engine ECM with later year because of common issue with 93 model. No check engine or other issues since.
  5. this week, flushed the transmission via "Rodney flush"
  6. checked transmission codes and got a code 62 - solenoid 1. I think this is an old code. twice in the past year i have had the issue where it starts out in 2nd gear. Its not doing this now, but I am guessing the code is there from the last time it occurred.
This is a 93 model with 210k miles. I feel pretty certain that its the lockup solenoid and will probably just replace all 4, but wanted to get some other opinions before I spend money on the issue. Thanks for the feedback!

I'm in the process of replacing my solenoids this week. I had similar issues too.

Did you order your solenoids yet?

I bought mine from cobra transmission for about $50 each

So far it's been an easy job. Once you get the pan and filter off unbolt the solenoids then take a flat head screw driver to pop out the solenoids.

I was just about to order from there, just wanted to see if anyone had similar issues. Most issues I've seen seem to be with loss of 1st gear. I just had the pan off last week, wish I had them on hand at the time. Did you have issues with the crossmember being in the way of the two rear pan bolts?

Issues... yes. Lol. I got them off but haven't put them back on yet. I used a 1/4" extension with a 10mm socket which fit right above the cross member

Although the 442f is in a slightly different family, the solenoids in the a34xx series (including a343f in later 80s) of transmissions are a fairly common issue. Replace them all. I believe I bought all of mine on amazon for about $150. Be careful on the transmission flushes especially if the transmission has never been serviced. Double check that the TPS sensor is still in spec. That will lead to the missed/poor shift issues too.

Solenoids came today, they all have the Aisin stamp on them. I also ordered the filter kit as well from Cobra. It doesn't fit our transmission. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

I have a 93 as well. Running synthetic from the PO. She was taking a lot time warm up enough to shift into OD. FSM says the ECT (Electronic Coolant Temp sensor) talks to ECM, tells trans when its warm enough to upshift. Changed the ECT out and resolved that issue.

One of the triggers to unlock the torque converter is the TPS in the idle position. If it is not adjusted correctly then it could be in the idle position at your very light throttle setting.

Agreed. I adjusted the TPS while I had the throttle body off per the FSM. I'm going to recheck it this weekend while it's installed.

LSUfj make sure you check your parts from Cobra. They sent me a wrong solenoid in the right box. All the boxes that held the solenoids looked like they had been repackaged. I'm not real happy about their service.

John at Cobra transmission has rectified the issues and the correct part is being shipped out.
