A little erosion control, after the rains

We recently had 2 1/4” of rain in 4 days. A neighbor/friend noticed his road was a little muddy. He found that a few ground squirrel had tunneled near is roping arena and out the hillside.
The rains flooded the arena and excess water went out the squirrel holes.
That is a 4x8 sheet of plywood for size reference.

With less than 12 hours before the next series of storm, had to use the material at hand.
Built a series of terraces using “T” posts and the plywood.
Tamped the soil to get a solid base.

Picked up a load of bricks and some pillar blocks. They came from an old farmhouse I demolished.
Added the pillar blocks to the base of the plywood on the uphill side. Interlocked them for minimal movement.

The erosion cut into the hill pretty deep.

Added the brick and blocking.
I set the bricks and tamped them in w 6lb sledge.

Started adding DG (Decomposed Granite) that washed down onto the road.
Tamped each load and built it up in layers.

The entire hillside is loose.
The earth is just sliding off.

This guy did this by just sitting.

Once the upper terrace was done, did the same with the lower terrace.

My repair is the hardest packed soil on the hillside.
Late in the spring the landowner may rent a big Excavator. He will park it in the road and pack the hillside.

Looks are a bit deceiving.

Wow, that is a lot of erosion, and a lot of work to shore it up. Hope it works well for you!

Had a bit of a water problem in March of 2024.

Roads flooded, yards and pastures underwater.

Road and bridge washed out.
Left 7 families stranded with no way out of the valley.

Fired up the sawmill and cut lumber and built a “land bridge” so the residents could get to work, school, shopping, etc.

Once the water went down to a reasonable level, rebuilt the bridge.
Added an additional 48” x 40’ culvert tube next to the existing one.

Added some stabilization to the down stream side of the dual 48” culvert tubes.
