That’s nuts. How much of that wil be left when we are up there for HIH?

Probably not a lot actually on the passes. Some of the basins may actually keep some of their snow, but I would think by end of July, it will all be gone. It's going to be wet though and the wildflowers and the water crossings should be epic.

Bring boots for mud/rain (unless you go full time flip flop). Absolute best investment you can make if the rains come down and the mud levels are already high. Borrow your grandmas gardening boots if you have to, you will thank us. Also, a couple of rain slickers are great thing to toss in the rig.

Bushducks is a good one too. I use it as the season approaches. You will notice that there isn't a lot of activity yet as most of the big passes on the front range and in the San Juans are snowed in currently. But, they will be cleared pretty quick.

Had a good weekend under the LX getting it ready.

For anyone wondering about the CB radios, my first year I had a handheld and it was terrible. I couldn't hear anything. Last year I bought a President McKinley and velcro'd it to my center console and ran a magnetic antenna. It worked flawless even when I was the last vehicle.

This year I'm stepping up to a fire stick and new velcro that wont fall off in the summer heat. At this rate I should be able to talk to the dead.

I have a baofeng with a long, annoying antenna and the CB works just as well on the trail.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try borrowing a handheld with a magmount antenna. I'm not going to buy and install a mobile unit just for one event. Fingers crossed it works well or I get on a run with some HAMs.

After a few years with the velcro failing over and over again, I'm about one don't-care-moment away from just running some screws into a bit of plastic trim for the mount and calling it a day, but your 100 is probably nicer than mine though

That is one expensive CB! It does seem to have it's own SWR meter though, so I guess it's pretty reasonable. Am curious if it's better than my Midland 75-822 hooked up to a Browning antenna. I don't get a ton of range out of mine and it's got quite a bit of static despite solid grounding and a clean SWR read. I know CB is typically limited, but I'd pay the $$ for an improvement for sure.

It worked great even in a run with 20+ vehicles that I tail gunned for.

Buy one on Amazon and return it after if you dont find it useful.

I wouldn't go that far.

Might give this one a shot then. I like the internal SWR meter, multi-color display and the auto-squelch. Just need to figure where to mount the unit! If only they came with a remote faceplate like the HAM units have. That would be sweet.

Hurricane Pass from yesterday. 2nd shot is the mine as of yesterday. 3rd shot is the mine from HIH8. They are working hard and fast to clear these passes before end of June. There are a few avalanche chutes that need to be cleared, but they are getting them cleared out quickly as well. HIH9 being 2 weeks later in July than HIH8 gives us more time for things to be cleared and for the flowers to start blooming. SOOOOOO looking forward to HIH9!!!!

I'm a ham. I'll shoot you a message with the runs I'll be on. I'll be attempted to have APRS running and may fiddle with group monitoring if there are enough folks with Yaesu radios. (I have a FTM-400 in the cruiser and a FT2D handheld)

If you end up installing this make sure you post some install pics. I’m interested in this unit as well.

Before you spend that kind of money on a CB head unit, consider that:
- Regardless of the unit all CB radios are limited to 5 watts of power. Compare that to a mobile HAM uhf/vhf rig at 50 watts of power.
- a poorly tuned HAM setup will still out perform a perfectly tuned CB setup
- SWR meters are only $30 (and I will bring mine, you can use it!)
- HAM gives you APRS (for tracking position and sending messages without cell phones) check out aprs.fi (website)
- Many HAM radios have GPS built in

I'd keep your current CB setup and save the money for a good HAM setup... long term you'll use your HAM way more and it can actually hit repeaters and get you help if you are stranded...

Meanwhile I'm here burning my brain in 114 weather! And not even close to top summer heat yet! Can't wait to see those walls!

I go for a light medium rare bake for my brain, salt and pepper and a sear on both sides, then into the oven... the thermo on the cruiser today said 119 here in phx....

You guys are making me happy to live in Albuquerque where it only got to 90 today. It almost makes up for being one of the worst cities in the nation for crime statistics.

Some things in life are a certainty.

Amongst them: death, taxes, the annual 100s in the hills thread turning into a discussion on CBs and then a discussion on how hot it is where we live and how much we want to be in the mountains!

For those new to CB usage, an information primer to the lingo and proper etiquette can be found in the instructional film, Smokey and the Bandit.

Here's a shot of Clear Lake a buddy of mine took earlier today....followed by a photo of Clear Lake last July. Everyone I've been talking with up there expects these trails to "thaw" out and be clear several weeks before we arrive, so no worries. Just thought it was an amazing comparison.
