Came across a '93 with 180K on it. Only thing wrong with it is the transmission.
Owner said it needs a new/rebuilt tranny. Needs torque converter, oil pump and stator if I remember correctly... other things wrong with the tranny but don't remember all he said.

Where's the best place to get a transmission relatively inexpensive for a '93 FZJ80??? Would like to buy whole rebuilt tranny or individulal parts. Transfer case is in good condition.

Would like to talk to good reputable Land Cruiser Transmission shop.

Would like to price individual parts vs rebuilt tranny.

Just trying to figure out if the cost is worth the effort.

Owner said he'd sell it to me for $5K.

Ron,

Transmissions in the 93-94 are pretty stout. It might be something that can be repaired unless the PO ran it out of ATF or some other type of abuse. Solenoid failure is a possibility but you don't tell us the symptoms.

If you are going to mod the vehicle and wheel it hard you may want to look at the Aussie transmission mods that Christo is selling. Probably will cost about the same as a used transmission.

As for used ones, try the usual places like cruiserparts.net. You would be taking a big chance with a used one.

Don't really want to take any chances. Just want to drop the old one and swap another in.
Nothing fancy. Just want to get a solid transmission/rebuilt replacement. Where can I get direct replacement short of a used one? Know of any reputable tranny dealers?

Maybe I can talk the LC owner down on the price also.

Can the Aussie tranny be used DD or is it just for hard core wheelin?
Don't want someone to snap up the LC because I didn't do my homework properly.
I'll kick myself if I lose it. Then again, I'll kick myself if I buy it and the tranny cost me and arm and a leg and and ear.

IMO $5k is not worth it. It would need to be closer to 3K to make sourcing a used A442F worthwhile.

Search www.car-part.com for a tranny.

QwikParts Auto in San Bernadino appears to have at least 2 transmissions.

B is right on the money  , mine is a 93 and it flares between 2nd and 3rd. Fix is an Aussie tranny from Slee  , bottom line if I want it to run like new. However this condition has gotten no worse since I aquired the rig and with proper care I expect to nurse it for quite some time. The tranny is very stout. :bounce:

At that price and committed to swapping in the tranny I'd pass on that truck and find one that doesn't need the work. Then again with some time you could possibly get a tranny code out of it and maybe diagnose a bad solenoid which is very repairable and then makes the truck something to consider buying.

I bought a 93 with 230K on it for $5k a year ago knowing that i had a front axle rebuild and a whine during acceleration. I checked out used tranies and t-cases through LKQ before I bought it and decided that the risk was worth taking. i can't remember how much a used trany was, but at the time it didn't scare me off. They had several in their system with less than 80K miles on them so I figured since mine had 230k chances were good a used one would last. Just figure that any repair you do now will make you more knowledgeable about your rig. Thats my excuse

Will talk to the owner first thing tomorrow morning. I'm sure he'll lower the price. He threw the price out off the top of his when I asked. He seems to be a level headed guy and I'm sure he'll understand when I explain the circumstances of worth. I'll talk him down... if he drops it $2K, I'll buy it.

tltaylor22, what? exactly is LKQ, and how can I contact them?

But really looking for a rebuilt tranny. The Slee Aussie tranny is too expensive.
Where can I get a rebuilt tranny?

Ron,

>> Where can I get a rebuilt tranny? <<

You've asked this question 3 times in this thread. If someone knows they will tell you when they read this thread.

Does this truck with a bad transmission have lockers? If it doesn't you should keep looking if it truly needs a new/rebuilt tranny.

Oops. No harm meant on redundancy. Brain lock.

Yes, it does have lockers! That's why it's so intriguing to me.

Toyota does not offer a reman for this application. A new transmission is available.

Transmission, 35000-60440, list $4,945.22.
Torque converter, 32000-60090, list $925.15

Overhaul parts for the oiginal unit are also available.

Dan, do you have a number to call from where you got those prices?
I'd like to price the following parts:

-Overdrive ring gear with bearings (Front and Rear)

-Pump assembly with stator- (10")

Found out from the owner this morning what it needs.

Said he'd sell the thing to me for $3K. Trying to persuade for less.

Not exactly.

You see, I am a Toyota dealer parts manager..........:D

Ron,
You're new here and it would be in your best interest to read some past posts to get a feel for the forum, the players, and the vehicle.

To jump start you, CruiserDan is the parts manager at American Toyota and a fellow cruiserhead. He's been giving us "Smart Shopper" pricing here on IH8MUD and on the old SOR forum for about 3 or 4 years. Those of us lucky enough to know Dan and to have his store down the street, have been getting great service, parts advice, and prices for many years.

All transactions and price quotes should be done via PM.

Phone home Dan. But remember its ok to talk to yourself just not to answer......... :D

I've familiarized myself and would like to spend time just cruising through at my leisure, but it's just me. Trust me, I've spent many hours going through the forum. Frankly don't remember everything I see and read as I skim the posts. Interaction will get me remembering properly though. Heck, I barely remember what I did the other day at work. Sometimes just want to resource this place and take advantage of one of it's strengths... the people! I'm sure most will understand and not take offense.

$1800 is the price I was looking at when I needed a t-case. That is for both tranny and t-case. 80,000mi. Chirsto told me that all junkyards always say it has less than 80k mi on their parts.
If you get a used tranny, get the t-case too.

If push comes to shove, I can install the Aussie in my '94 and and put the '94's in the '93.

Would rather buy the individual parts though...
