I'm just about to finish getting a '88 4Runner ready for the road.

I'm in need of tires. its stock except for a 7/8" block under the rear springs to level it out.

this is going to be my DD so I'm looking for an AT tire. I had a set of 32x11.50 15 MTRs and they were too big and just plain poor driving quality.

its running 15x8.5" wheel.

Whats your opinion on AT tires. I like the look of the BFG AT's but they are quite expensive.

I've got a couple friends that have Yokohama Geolander AT's on their rigs (one FJ60 and one Jeep) and they have been quite happy.

Anybody got preferences? and why?

Thanks in advance!

I put Geolander ATs on my '84 F150. Good tire, nice ride, fairly aggressive for an AT, decent load handling, good in snow and ice. I like them a lot.

I put Bridgestone AT Revos on my '86 4runner. Higher end tire, real nice on the highway, pretty good off road aired down to 15 psi for an AT. Haven't seen winter yet. Supposed to have excellent durability.

I like the BFG'S long lasting great traction strong sidewalls. In my opinion they are worth the extra money. I have at least one set for every vehicle (7) that I own all 4WD.

I'm partial to BFG's. I have had outstanding wear on BFG's. I got 25k out of a set of Muds and still plenty of tread. Sold them to another guy with a K5 when I went to 35's. Her put another 20k on them. Ran a set of 31 AT's on my Wifes K5 and they rode great. Were awesome in the rain.

My 86 Runner is going to be more of an exploration vehicle. 2 inch body lift and a 1 inch ball joint spacer, longer shackle on the rear (and the extra leaf already in it to level it) is all it will get.

I had to move my tire purchase up to get rid of the sorry Uniroyalpeicesofjunks that were beating us to death. Put a set of 33x12.5x5 BFG KO's on it Saturday....NO lift. Stock back space 15x7 Outlaw II. Hammered the pinch weld flat to the body mount was the extent of my modifications...NO RUB.

Rides like a Caddie! Down on power but not horrible. I have a 4.37 E-locker to throw in it as soon as I find a matching front so should be reasonably good with that. I think it will be fine on the gear...little sluggish but its holding its own at 70mph in 5th.

Power is going to ba about the gearing and rotational mass. If this is primarily a drive go with a set of aluminum wheels. I had originally planned to go with the 10.5's too keep weight down and When I wear these out I may well go to that size. Just got to good of a deal on these tires to pass up. Surprisingly when I weighted the Stock 85 Chrome steelies with the 235x75's they were 61.5 lb. The 33x12.5's on the aluminum rims are only 68lb. By keeping the weight down it helps acceleration it also helps braking.
