Obviously going to need rear sump oil pan from SC400, need to fab new motor mounts, trans mount, etc., and confirm fitment of accessories and exhaust. . . but you get the idea. :grinpimp:

Why not run an 80 series centered rear diff, and get a 9.5 diff?

Whats the weight of that 1UZFE?

Good to see this build happening again!

80 diff isn't centered; it's offset a bit. Not sure exactly how much. I have an LX450 now . . . guess I'll go crawl under it.

1UZ weighs about 385lbs; small block Chevy is 575 - so pretty fair savings. Think the trans will be about a wash; auto may be a tad lighter.

sweet build. Subscribed. No rig yet, but looking at an 88 FJ62... I worry about rust up in this neck of the woods though...

Got the 1UZ & A341E temporarily placed yesterday. A new trans crossmember will have to be fabricated along with new engine mounts.
In the pics the engine is sitting lower than I plan to have it; maybe by 1-2 inches.
First impressions - I'm loving how the 1UZ fits relative to the firewall / rad support. I was a bit worried with overall width, but am happy to say the stock manifolds fit with the heat shields removed.
Went ahead and set the intake back on the engine to check overall hood clearance, have plenty of room even after raising the engine a couple inches.
Still need to check front drive accessories - alternator, PS, AC.
Obviously the front sump pan is going to have to go, still looking for a SC400 setup (if anyone knows of one, please let me know).
Also, need to confirm clearance for the 300 t-case / shifters.

Another side job? I take it that the side jobs are giving you the slush fund necessary to add all the cool things onto your lc build....;)

LOL, yeah basically. 7 side jobs during my time off . . . it's a delicate balance between working on other peoples junk and working on my own junk. :D

Just came across thread and WOW! You do realize you are coming up on your 4 year anniversary in Jan. right? You remind me of my father-in-law. He is a complete motor head with his own shop and all and will pull a perfectly good motor just to put a new one in.
I'm not going to try to use words to describe ur 60 except to say AWESOME! Can't wait to see the final product (u too I'm sure).
Totally off subject but what line of work are you in that keeps you in Japan so much?

Yes, please don't remind me. . .

Actually, not off subject at all. In fact, it is the path I chose in my line of work that has pushed me close to my 4 year anniversary on the 60.
I am a program manager for Toyota - responsible for production of 2014 Highlander. When I started the 60 I was an engineer at Toyota, about 6-8 months into the 60 project I had the opportunity to move into a pre-production management role. The job is awesome, but it require long hours & heavy travel. . . the rest is history.

Someday I'll finish the 60. . . I have to, as I have a 66 C10 and a 78 Yamaha XS650 project(s) waiting in line . :D ;)

Skinner that's a pretty sweet job. Why not put a highlander drivetrain in? Hehe

2GR V6, just doesn't have the same ring as all-aluminum, 6 bolt main, DOHC 1UZFE Lexus V8. . . LOL

Merry Christmas, all!

And while we love our Highlander the low end torque just seems lacking. If this was to be a daily driver rig with no off road seen other than the rare fire road that would work as the gearing and the giddie-up is great for the road.

Anything new in 2012?

Been spending most of my time getting the old drivetrain packaged up.
However, I did confirm all accessories are going to clear & received my rear sump setup last week.

What's your down the line thoughts when it comes to the possible heat-soak to the coil packs as well as the brake master if you're gonna be running the headers w/o the shields? Remember that's why the FE's had cooling fans. Those engine bays are an oversized Dutch Oven. ;) ~Just saying b/c it took me forever to figure out a simple assed solution to my heat-soak'd floorboard and brake lines on the 4Runner.

As for the different oil/sump pan try talking to Robert (RMA) on Yotatech, he's been doing swaps into 1st-Gen Runners and seems to have a good bead on them. you can also try out some of the members or vendors via Lextreme.

Shane

p.s. Happy New Year's! Hope all is well with everything! :D Bring the littlest one over to drool on/in the 60 yet?

Initial plan is to HPC the factory manifolds. If that ends up not being enough, I suppose I'll make shields for the effected parts . . . my wife drives an LS with the 1UZ; I wouldn't say the engine bays are "oversized" - it's a pretty snug fit.

You running an FE in your 4-Runner?

I ended up picking up an entire setup from Gazi on Lextreme; it arrived last week.

You too brother!
My little boy comes & visits me in the shop from time to time, but actually, it's my 2yo daughter that is always in the shop - she loves "drilling holes" on the Bridgeport & pulling everything out of the bottom drawers of my toolbox. . . :D

Take care

Nope, just a bit of port/polish to the 3VZE plus some Thorley headers. I'll pm you the tech, long story, too boring for this thread. ~Translation, I have this weird soft-spot for the 3.0 right now. These days my work daily driver's usually a Scion or AccessCab 4cyl'd Tacoma so I am spoiled by 22+mpg's.

As for kid stuff, ummm, yeah mine's getting nowhere near power tools until she's at least in 4th grade. Preferably never, she's gonna be either a rocket scientist or better if we have our way. IMHO Keep your daughter away from the truck, mine got a hold of a grey scotchbrite pad recently and decided to "Help Dadda clean truck!". It's ok though, it's the right dinged up fender anyhow, so she just sped up the pending body work on it. ;)

Keep plugging away at things and do what you gotta with work b/c it makes all the kid time that much more worth it. If you're heading back over the Pacific again how about you finally show us some pics from over there even if it's a hike up a hillside?

I know things should settle out soon enough for all of us and I know I am looking forward to actually getting the freedom to travel across more than 1-2 state lines over a long weekend again. I'm starting to be able to cash in some stuff and take 3 day weekends (like when Lil'One's pre-school's closed) :D and as for travel, well, I miss it. My stupid wimpy gripes about airports, rentals, FJ-Newbie's, etc have all fallen aside, all that remains are the fun memories to be built back upon. ;)

Heading back in 1.5 weeks. There for a week, back for 2, there again for 2, back for 2, and then there again for 2. . . you sure you miss travel? LOL

I've done a fair amt of hiking & exploring on my trips to Japan, but I don't have any pics on my work PC . . . will see if I can load some from the house.
